Was there a Somali diaspora in the West in the 80s?

UK has had Somalis since the 1900s. Canada a small population in the 80s. US Somalis came around the 2000s-present day.

You are right about the UK and Canada hosting somalis early on, however a lot of somalis including my family came here shortly after the war. I remember as a youngin, we had a very westernized somali canadian family that came to visit and people were shocked, everybody thought they were gaalo because the girls blond streaks on their hair and wore jeans. Yes that was the talk of the whole xafad :)

Really? Strange.

In the late 80s and early 90s, a lot of the older generation didn't even wear proper hijab. I think Somalis really started judging non hijabis in the late 90s and early 2000s.
A lot of aunts didn't wear hijab in the early 90s, but now they are jilbaabis with some wearing niqaab. And yes, they will definitely judge you for not wearing hijab lol.

London and Moscow. UK & RUSSI were the BUM in the 80s

I met an old ass Somali man, biggest saqajaan I've ever met. Man says he's been in Canada since late 70's and had several bars in Edmonton in the 80's. Most Somalis moved to Edmonton in mid 2000's

A lot of my family were in New York and Virginia in the 80s. A lot in Virginia as well. Most of my close friends were born in the states. And they were born before me.

Most of the fobs came around 93 to 2000. Cedar was full of Somalis in 98 lol
there was a good size Somali community in New York during the 1920s
