One part of me thinks that the inter-gender "wars" that get mentioned often here is just part of the long delayed feminist movement in our community. Somali women are rightfully judging Somali history and culture through the lens of gender. Most of Somalia's problems are male created and back home, women are generally breadwinners despite taking a backseat in many households.
However, another part of me thinks that Somali men and women have taken this rightful paradigm shift in mentality and taken it too far. Saying that guys need to do household chores is different from insulting people on social media. Movements like Abdiexit and Halimoexit just embarrass us and prevent an honest discussion about gender in our society.
But after all this, when I go IG and see ajnabi girls talking about how they expect their ex-partner to still pay for their expenses and male rappers like Future dissing women classlessly, I think we over-exaggerate our gender "conflict".
I have a lot more to say laakin this what came to my head first.

It what it is the community and lineage had to be gatekeep by men. I'm not looking for support from somali women or any group for that matter. Somali young men are on their own. Until we better ourselves build establishment to help our own get employed and be protected were going to keep having issues. Our female counterparts are associated and loyal to our enemies and quite frankly that's okay.
I’ve never had a negative interaction with a Somali man outside of the internet. They’ve always been decent and welcoming, as far as associates and friendships go. But that’s just my personal experience. This new age buuq about Mehr and unrealistic “wife/husband expectations” are causing a major rift in our community. Somali men are also accountable for this division. It would help if they withheld their online judgements rather than trying to police women over how they present themselves. With that being said, the internet is not real but it does influence a lot of ppl. We should all be cautious with what we post in general.

They have every right to speak on any issue they choose. Nothing can ever change unless we address whatever issues do not serve our community. Part of the reason why the west is always ahead socially, financially etc is because they improve on their culture, laws and stamp out social problems to create a cohesive society. They’re not telling each other to shut up about rape because it’s ‘embarrassing’.
Do you know how difficult it is to speak about your divorce, and the stigma there is being a Somali woman who is divorced with multiple kids? Do you think women giving desperate pleas to younger girls not to make the same mistakes is some sort of attack on men. Older women have literally give up on the men. They’re at such a low point where they can’t even fathom their daughters having heathy relationships with a Somali man. That’s truly sad to me. I think the culture is redeemable if there were real efforts made towards equality.
I’m not going to even mention the social issues back home and the epidemic of child rape. You can’t possibly think that Somali men and Somali women are equal……
