A union with a strong military will stop Ethiopia and other neighbouring/close countries from occupying you.

Also as long as all profit from oil and natural resources and all energy from wind mills and solar panel are split evenly and with no bias to all states depending on population size and need, then Somaliland will benefit more from a Federal Republic than it would as an independent state.
