It was a fake war against al-Shabaab which was used as a cover to distribute internationally donated military aid to Hawiye militias (macawiisley) in central Somalia. The fake war failed and the militias went back to fighting other Somali tribes namely the Darod in the central-east, namely the Leelkase and Marehan. The weapons were distributed by Hassan Sheikh Mohamud who is from the Hawiye clan in southern Galmudug (central-south Somalia).
