What is it though? Other than some of them balding, which is nature taking its course.

Somalis, other Horners and sometimes also Sudani Arabs and Nubians tend to have a hairline that grows farther back which results in a "large forehead". The forehead is not actually larger than any other group's nor is the shape actually all that unique; our hairlines tend to just be higher up. What I've noticed, anyway. This isn't uniform, though. Some Somalis, Oromos, Xabashis or whatever else certainly don't have this trait.

it’s over exaggerated for Somalis. We have the same level of large foreheads like other East Africans.

I’ve met many Somalis with a small forehead

So, it is a receding hair line exposing plenty of forehead, but not a large forehead per se.

No one in my extended family, or friends has it, and I do not see it, granted there are people with larger heads than others, and that is found in all ethnicities.

Why do some Somalis have receded hairlines on the side as well?

I wouldn't be surprised if it's mostly about the modern day diet, genetics and maybe climate. High sugary diet leads to high insulin and chronic inflammation in the body couple that with genetics and voila there you have it.
