Hello, this is my first post since creating an account. I've been lurking and finally found many posts about our heritage, but never in detail when it comes to certain clothes and accessories. I'm excited to find many Somalis in this community who have vast knowledge of our history, and I'm eager to learn more. I will be posting many threads based on our culture and asking many questions. I hope we all learn from and educate each other.
What is the name of this garment style?, which I've seen in many vintage photographs dating from the late 1800s to the 1930s?
It has layered pieces and a puffier underskirt. and the dress is not wrapped traditionally, but rather imitates it while being sewn.
This guntiino is also unique from the traditional wrapped guntiino ; this one has three layers on the skirt, almost mimicking a ruffled dress. It also has a panel of fabric in the middle of the skirt going vertical and has the traditional woven pattern in red, yellow, and orange.
Here is Khadija Qalanjo wearing it in her iconic era.
Please give as much information and details as you can you can also provide links to blogs, YouTube, or TikTok videos. It would be a great help, as I am interested in learning as much about our culture and clothes. Thank you
