That’s interesting to learn.

My parents weren’t exceptionally religious. They prayed of course, they fasted, and my mum wore shaash/ilyar and diracyaal/dresses. I can understand more religious people would have struggled if there was a policy against their particular believes and dress.
The only anti religious thing that I can remember is something that happened in the 70s. Basically Siad Barre decided to change inheritance law so that women could inherit the same amount of money as males, some religious authorities protested a lot against the governement because they said it was haram to change inheritance laws. The Siad regime responded by arresting many Shaykhs and some of them were executed

Damn I didn’t know that. I guess the people may not have been anti religion but he seems to have wanted us to have a watered down version of Islam.

The government was more concerned about anyone challenging their authority, they didn't really care that much if it was Shaykhs or anyone else.
Anyway i believe somalis were "more muslim" before 1991. Back then somalis were more focused on the core aspects of islam like being a good person and stuff, today Somalis are more concerned about outward aspects like beards, wearing khamis, niqab, hijab etc but the society is more corrupt than it was 30-40 years ago

Free education and healthcare is a socialist concept, not a communist concept and both were free even before Afweyne. We did attempt to copy the Soviet mass producing industry, huge military parading, providing orientation aka hanuuninta dadwaynaha which is organising group seminars and teaching the teachings of Lenin and Stalin.

Afweyne dropped Communism completely after 1976. By then he built a strong army, fulfilled his max 2 years as head of OAU and joined the Arab league. He felt he had enough diplomatic ties and world partners to stand on his own feet.
