Where does the name Abdi come from?

Abdullah, Abdulrahman, Abdiwahab, etc are beautiful names with important meaning... but “Abdi”? Why are there people literally named slave. No context for whose slave. Just slave. Why do we do this and who decided it was okay?

Abdullah is slave of Allah
Abdulrahman is slave of Ar-Rahmaan, which means the Most Merciful
Abdiwahab is slave of Al-Wahab, which means the Giver of Gifts
Ar-Rahman and Al-Wahab are both one of the 99 names of Allah, and most names that begin with Abdi are from it.
And Abdi is just a shorter version of whatever their actual name is

I could agree with you but then we’d both be wrong

Using the word "عبد Abdi" alone without attaching one of Allah's 99 names is considered incorrect.

Abdi in this context means slave of god. Rahman,Raheem,Karim,Rashid etc are all names of Allah.

Abdi-Rahman: Slave of the most gracious
Abdi-Raheem: Slave of the most merciful
Abdi-Kareem: Slave of the most generous
Abdi-Rashid: Slave of the rightly guided

Abd = slave
Abdi = my slave

Arabs like Yemenis usually use Abdo (his slave ) instead of abdi when they shorten the names .

Most Somalis don't realise that,
Imagine calling someone named abdi in Arabic
tacaal ya abdi = come my slave :damn:

Arabs dont call themselves abdi cuz it literally means "my slave" it sounds weird

Somalis nicknaming themselves as slaves in different language lol

From experience, it's because Westerners don't like saying long names and always want to shorten it, hence "Abdi". Good thing most people don't know it's meaning :drakelaugh:

I noticed when Khaleejis and South Asians shorten the name they drop the abd part and keep the name of god. I've seen them go by Majid, Kareem, Waheed, Rasheed. Never seen a Somali do that.

Yh I have a friend from Jordan named Malik. My mum told me that's haram though lol.

But yh, doing it that way is definitely better than everyone being called Abdi.
