Why are Somali girls/women non athletic generally speaking?

i think bc of culture we don’t really have sports culture for girls but my cousins parents are really big on sports they’re family put them in so many diff clubs/sports it’s rlly depends some ppl are diff

Let me correct that for you.

*Why are Diaspora Somalis non athletic generally speaking?*

This is really the only region in Somalia where Somalis are athletic in terms of fast twitch imo. Majority of the good middle distance 400-1500 runners I know in Diaspora have family links here.

Somali girls back home are ethier super skinny or obese there is no middle ground

The Somali girls in the diaspora are attractive when there young but they lose the body the minute they have a kid due to the fact that they don’t work out

you say that as if the men are atheltic. and also is there not a literal boxing champion from the uk whos a somali woman. thats more than any male has ever accopmlished
Somali males in the diaspora are athletic and play basketball and other sports all the time we will have a Somali in the NBA soon enough

Somali women on average don’t play sports or work out it’s just the truth let’s not bring gender war nonsense into this thread

Most of the girls I know played soccer, basketball, badminton, tennis, and volleyball to name a few. I played soccer in a league since I was small and my parents made me go to the park and practice regularly. For basketball I know some girls who played competitively they were so good. But I think what happens is University happens and people have less time to play in leagues.

Nah those are reer magaal and thats a stereotype the gabdho back home eat healthy and look healthy same for the men, its a bonus if they are maryooley.

I believe its because sports aren't promoted/supported as much for women as it is for men.

It does not mean Somali women are incapable of being athletic, when the Somali government back in the 70s/80s invested into women's sports , they were regularly competing at high levels with women from other countries and was getting scholarship offers in prestigious American universities to join their sports teams as star athletes

I remember reading what the Kacaan government did was invest heavily into women and mens sports, as a way to bring somalis together across regional and clan lines. They had stadiums and sports team across all the major towns and organized inter-regional games between various sports teams. Stuff like that will foster civic pride and cohesion.

Example:
In the 1980s, I was captain and player on the Somali Women’s National Basketball Team. Our strong government supported us with the freedom to play and that led me to earn a scholarship at University of District of Columbia in America. In 1991, soon after I arrived in America, civil war broke out and prevented me from returning to Somalia until 2009.

But we are starting to see it change now in the last few years. There is more of them being active, partaking in running activities, sports and hiking in the mountains in Somalia etc
More women running shows that life, slowly, is changing
But something is quietly shifting. Across the capital of Somaliland, a self-declared nation in the Horn of Africa, women are increasingly demanding space to move. They are building gyms and starting sports leagues, going on predawn runs at the edge of the city and to evening Zumba classes. And by doing so, they are proving that there is no contradiction in being a Somali, a devout Muslim, and a woman athlete, all at once.
