Believe it or not they used to prefer renting and trusting my dad with their apartments than the southern Italians in the 70’s in Parma. Am sure things have changed with the mass immigration in Italy. Still the mafia is a huge problem in the south.

Blame the Ancient Greek Colonies that accelerated mixing between Southern European populations with Ancient Middle-Easterners[and some North African as well] & enabled these racially mixed individuals to settle in South Italy & Sicily who eventually migrated into Rome in the Imperial age. Northern Italians [Central Italians included] are far more European and preserved more of the Pre-Roman Italic ancestry with some Germanic influences. Whereas, South Italy & Sicily are a hot pot of race mixing.

Its just economic. They still consider them the same. I stayed in Italy for a while. Went as far north in Turin and all the way down in Palermo.
