Thread A question I’ve seen asked many times is why do RSF militiamen routinely film their own atrocities. The explanation for why comes down primarily to two factors. The first is that the militia has fully ideologically justified its crimes to the point that not only are militiamen not ashamed of their deeds they are actually proud of them. The second factor centres around the wide lack of accountability that the RSF militia faces.
RSF militiamen have several overlapping ideologies to morally justify their crimes against civilians. The most dangerous of which being the racial superiority ideology that the militia has primarily utilised to justify its genocide of Non Arab ethnicities in Darfur.
This ideology is simple but effective because dehumanising individuals negates the need of morally justifying your actions against them. The clip below is of Baggara nomad children mocking the children of the Masalit by telling them we’ve killed your father’s and comparing the human mass of women and children being forced to flee to Chad to a heard of cattle. The comparison to cattle is notable; Baggara itself translates to cow people; the fact that these Baggara children rather than feel empathy to children their age fleeing for their lives instead think of the cattle they heard shows how deeply ingrained this racist ideology among these Arab Baggara Nomads is
In other regions of Sudan there is the ideology of conquest. For example while Militiamen may not view civilians native to Northern or Central Sudan in these areas as inherently inferior they do view them as belonging to rival ethnic groups who they are seeking to conquer.
For example at the start of the war people in Khartoum attempted to report the militia’s looting in their neighbourhoods to RSF commanders, they all got back the same response it’s their right to loot your neighbourhoods, these are their spoils of war.
Any form of resistance from civilians to militiamen taking their “rightful” war spoils, to the militiamen justifies violence. The most worrying aspect of this mentality is that young women are also viewed as war spoils by the militiamen.
Households will often give up their cars or money when threatened at gunpoint but resistance most often happens when militiamen demand to take away girls from the household. A large number of civilians have been killed simply for trying to protect their female family members from militiamen.
The second factor is that the RSF and the predecessor Janjaweed militias that they originated from have never once faced accountability for their genocidal atrocities and crimes. Militiamen are happy to film their crimes because they do not expect to face accountability.
More so and rather perversely RSF militiamen have realised that mass atrocities often work in their political favour. Take the latest round of RSF terror in Eastern Al Gezira. This latest bought of terror is being exploited by both the militia’s Emirati sponsors and its political allies in Taqqadum to diplomatically push for a settlement that preserves the militia and its capacity for terror.
The bad faith argument which in itself is tantamount to blackmail goes like this; in order to stop the militia’s terror you must accommodate them as a ruling constituent of the Sudanese State.
This argument isn’t just offensive because it completely negates the need for justice and accountability but it’s also based on the false premise that you can negotiate a lasting peace with a genocidal group. The only way to end this Janjaweed cancer is to militarily defeat it and many of those arguing otherwise simply want to allow the militia ample time to spread until it is able to consume the entire Sudanese State.
In summary RSF militiamen are happy to film their atrocities because their ideology justifies it to the point that they are proud of their actions not ashamed of them and also because politically they have never faced any consequence for their atrocities. No state can accommodate a militia that carries out these magnitude of atrocities without that state ceasing to exist itself. It’s either Sudan or the Janjaweed.
