I can kind of understand how a light skinned Somali would identify as an A-rab, but I cringe at the idea of a dark skin Somali person denying being of African heritage and instead claiming to be a decedent of those desert nomads.

There is truth to this. Siyad Barre's regime indoctrinated kids of our parents generation with songs in school praising arabs as our "brothers" and hating africans so is it really that big of a a surprise why so many feel that way? It wasn't that long ago.
