Why do some Somalis think we have 4c hair?

Somalis are like black people but instead of debating whether we would take 50k or dinner with Jay-Z we talk about people with 4c hair in our community :mjlol: why stress yourself with who has timo sakiin

The type of "4c" hair somalis isn't the same 4c hair as other African people. I think you can tell easily as other africans have patchy 4c hair

Very funny how they say: “MaJoRiTY HaVe 4 C HaIR” I’m like what? You just mad you got the Madow hair gene out of all you your family, blood.

Anything after type 3 hair is 4C in their eyes. They do not care to learn the difference as they find it the least favourable hair texture grade, markedly so among women. Merely observe their language, and you will see the deriding in action.

They speak disfavourably about type 4 hair like it is a burden. I genuinely feel sorry for the abuse they experienced, and God knows the chemicals they put in their hair.

They should have an instruction manual for mothers with different hair types than their daughters so they do not scar them for life. That is why I am surprised when they marry Non-HOA madows. So they can inflict even more verbal abuse on their less Somali-appearing daughters.

We must acknowledge that Somali society is rife with lookism and it is highly culturally ingrained. Also, you have it the hardest when you are far from the archetype. I feel sorry for those that experienced mistreatment because they deviate from the mean/average in one or more ways.

I love the diversity of the Somali people. We should embrace everything stead of shaming others

I don't mind it either. I was just telling the truth. That Somalis are one of the most lookist societies I have encountered and they are quite featurist, texturist and colourist (definitely the first two more than the last one).

Where do you think our lookist culture came from? Do you think it’s a pastoralists society thing? Since there’s not that many people vs a farmer society, nomads are very picky with spouses?

I'm not sure. I don't know if it is entirely owed to pastoralism. It seems somewhat culturally idiosyncratic. I don't know if other pastoral communities were like this so it's hard to compare. I know the Dinka have high marriage prices (exorbitantly so) and they are semi-nomadic. They seem to select for height and darker skin tones.

What I can tell you is it appeared certain looks were favoured over others and commodified to an extent. You can see it with the bride/price in xoolo historically given to the more laudable beauties. I certainly think Somalis practiced some from of selection of certain characteristics because I find their features slightly narrower than other neigbouring Cushitic-speakers on average. It is also more common to see looser textured hair among them (from my observation). Though I like the variability within Somalis as it makes things interesting.

There is.

Somalis with 4c exist. We will not erase their existence
I don’t think I’ve ever seen it apart from one person and even then, I wouldn’t even be surprised if they has a Somali Bantu in the family.

4C isn’t normal for Somalis whatsoever. 4A yes, 4b not so much, and it’s verging on the unusual, let alone 4C. Somalis don’t even know the difference between the the different 4s and will call a person with 4A hair which isn’t rare and say they have 4C which is most definitely rare.
