I honestly wonder how Somali culture has become so different in the past few decades. We went from women dressing like this:
To dressing way more conservative:
I don't have a huge problem with it since as Muslims, we're supposed to cover up, but I hate how intolerant our society can be. I like wearing my hair out, but that doesn't mean I'm a bad person. Even in most Arab countries, it's not unusual to see women with their hair out, but it's almost intolerable in Somali society.
I think as a Somali woman, I should have the right to wear my own hair out. When we have a society with qabiil-hatred, khat chewing, and un-Islamic superstitious beliefs, wearing hijab is the least of our worries.
Women should not be forced to cover themselves. It's between them and Allah in my opinion.
