Is it colonialism? Then how come states in South East Asia who also suffered from brutal colonialism are thriving in comparison to us?

Geography? How come states with horrible geography like Canada are doing way better then us?

Unironically colonialism I believe, not just that but the fact that African leaders are more interested in personal gain than their nation's wellbeing is one thing too.

The liberal international order has consistently worked to prevent the industrialisation of developing countries, especially in Africa, by maintaining a neocolonial economic relationship. This system keeps "developing" and "underdeveloped" nations dependent on producing cheap raw materials and natural resources for the West, while forcing them to import food and capital. Western multinational corporations exacerbate this dependence by flooding these countries with subsidised imports, undercutting local food producers and manufacturers. As a result, local businesses go bankrupt, and their lands are purchased at low prices, often to be used for extracting raw materials that are then sold cheaply to the West for the production of luxury goods.

Africa, in particular, has long been a major source of raw materials such as minerals, gems, and gold ore, which are traded to the West at exploitative prices. While African nations possess rich natural resources, these often end up benefiting multinational corporations and Western consumers, rather than local populations. Many African countries remain dependent on exporting raw materials, which are processed into finished goods elsewhere, contributing to the persistent economic inequality between the Global South and the Global North.

Prior to the rise of neoliberalism, many developing countries tried to industrialise through import substitution. This approach involved imposing high tariffs, fixing local currencies, and providing state support for manufacturing, allowing these countries to protect local industries and import the raw materials and capital needed for industrial growth. However, import substitution didn't last because the overvalued currencies of these countries hindered their ability to export. They had to borrow large sums of money from international financial institutions to sustain their manufacturing and replace advanced imports. Without a steady income of US dollars to support their currencies, and with mounting debt, these countries were forced to submit to the IMF's neoliberal "structural adjustment" programs in exchange for loans, ending the import substitution era. As a result, they became debt colonies of the West.

This global economic structure ensures that the West remains at the top of the socio-economic hierarchy, benefiting from cheap goods produced in former colonies, while the local populations, especially in Africa, see little improvement in their living standards. Multinational corporations maintain a stronghold by establishing manufacturing hubs in places like Asia, such as Bangladesh, where large-scale production for Western markets occurs. While these countries export goods, they often serve little utility for local populations. Consequently, countries in the Global South are locked in a cycle of poverty and dependence, while the West continues to extract resources and profits from them, further deepening global inequality.
