Why is Evangelical Christianity becoming common in Ethiopia ?

Arrived during colonialism. People forget that before they sent their troops they sent explorers, missionaries, historians and businessmen as a first wave.

The Ethiopians are holding out better than we did. They've still got a lot of "traditional" faiths whilst Sufism was nearly completely wiped out in a generation in Somalia.

Do you think there is any chance for a revival?

Apparently 19% of ethiopia is now protestant. How did protestantism arrive in ethiopia?

Good question. I know they were not colonized by Europeans, so where is it coming from? Maybe volunteer preaching?

It's as he @Loldynamo said. Europeans have been doing missionary work since the 19th century and frankly before. They tried this with Somalis and were slowly succeeding for a short while in small pockets:

Above is a picture of an Italian missionary school in Xamar in 1937. This same sort of missionary work partly inspired the Sayyid and his comaptriots as even a source as rudimentary as Wikipedia imparts:

The news that sparked the Dervish rebellion and the 21 year disturbance according to the consul-general James Hayes Sadler was either spread or concocted by Sultan Nur of the Habr Yunis. The incident in question was that of a group of Somali children that were converted to Christianity and adopted by the French Catholic Mission at Berbera in 1899. Whether Sultan Nur experienced the incident first hand or whether he was told of it is not clear but what is known is that he propagated the incident in the Tariqa at Kob Fardod in June 1899.[13] In one of his letters to Sultan Deria in 1899, Sayyid Hassan said that the British "have destroyed our religion and made our children their children" alluding to Sultan Nur's incident with the Roman French Mission at Berbera. The Dervishes soon emerged as an opposition of the Christian activities, defending their version of Islam against the Christian mission.[14]

Easy question. I was also surprised by the large number of Ethiopian converts to Evangelical Christianity.

I asked an Ethiopian guy, and he told me that the majority of Ethiopian converts to Evangelical Christianity are Orthodox Oromos and other non-Habesha ethnicities who feel that the Ethiopian Orthodox Church discriminates against them, ie people like Abiy Ahmed.

Secondly, American Evangelicals travel to Ethiopia to win converts by enticing the poor

These are well behaved Somalis. Is their well behavior connected to their curiosity of a White creature before them?

Sufis still exist to a large extent in Somalia and they’re the majority in central Somalia or a little less than 50%. Pockets of them are scattered in Southern Somalia as well so they’re not completely gone contrary to what some Somali diaspora’s who haven’t visited the motherland think.

What are Sufi Somalis in the motherland like? How do they clash with the more salaf types?

Eeedo the people on the picture are not ethnic Somalis. These people are bantus!!!!

Yes, but there were in fact converted Somalis and there was missionary work being done to them too hence the quote about the Dervishes.

My mother's family are Sufi. They do clash with the salaf type quite often but thats just overall. the neighbourhood they live in is either Sufi's or just your regular Somali who dont really identify with Salafism or Sufism. So there were not really clashes tbh. Extremist salafs like AS however hate Sufis and are always destroying their shrines

No chance, my mum and my dad are second cousins and his side is sufi while her side is salafi. She views my dad's side of the family as uncivilised barbarians.

Sufi shrines viewed as having mystical powers were dug up and destroyed. You can't come back from that level of destruction.

My dad side of his family is but I don’t think they ever were a majority ? My mum side does not have an al shabab mentality ( salafis) but to them it’s alien

Sufism was also introduced in to somalia. The original islam got replaced by sufism in the somali lands.

We are orginally sunnis bro
