Why Socrates Hated Democracy

Interesting. And yes, I was taught the wonders of democracy at school as well and how the West is so blessed to have it, but my parents have always told me the downsides of democracy. My mum especially is a strong critic of it. Me and my parents always debate on this topic, and the fact that an Ancient Greek philosopher has the same criticism as us was nice to read about. Schools romanticise philosophers and worship Socrates as the father of philosophy but they somehow coincidentally forgot to tell us how much he hated their belvoded democracy.
I think it is that as long as we don't admit there is a flaw, then we can never diagnose the problem. So the schools and everyone tells us the system is correct, then we don't feel the need to check for problems when people generally are well off.

And think about this. Democracy is actually a western thing. The western powers have for a long time prided themselves in their superiority in that sense. So if they admit that their system is flawed, then that creates a weakness in the eyes for a potential superpower in the east like China. It's all about dominance. And why would the western countries risk changing things when they already have a good rep?

If you think out of the box for a sec, to be honest, China has a much more efficient system than the west. They have a coherent goal-oriented system which involves culture, politics and economics. They change their plans when it's necessary, and they are able to participate in the global market. Their economy is expected to increase to 10 trillion past the u.s in the next coming years. They have a three-stage plan where they change tactics on philosophy and political and economical according to the timeline. They haven't reached the first stage yet. They say it's expected that China will not reach the first stage in a very long time, which tells us that these people plan very far ahead, and they are patient.

While in u.s you have one politician running for president. He gets funded by corporations, in return, he has to support policies which give them the upper hand in the market. Then these policies tip the balance and make the markets more imbalanced and harder for small business owners to compete. This new president will do whatever he can do undo the last president's achievements and support new policies that may or may not fit with the reality. It's all a total clusterfuck.

We can criticise the chinese for many things, but they are going to win this game. Have you seen the belt and road infrastructure project they are working on? It's estimated to cost 8 trillion dollars...

The Chinese are definitely on the path to world dominance. The US is messed up because they use the already greatly flawed system of democracy paired up with corporate capitalism. Not a good mix.

Dude. You are making me smile again. Every time you put democracy in a bad light, I smile. It's expected of a farax, but xalimos never seem to care for such things at all.

Haha :icon e biggrin: I’ve always loved politics and philosophy and my time at university has taught me to critique everything under the sun. I read Machiavelli’s the Prince (my favourite book ever) and Plato’s the Republic when I was 17 and made me want to pursue a career in politics.

Somalis definitely need a strong dictatorship. They don’t know what’s good for them and are extremely lazy. It’s funny, because I can imagine Somalia prospering and thriving in a dictatorship as opposed to a democracy.

I concur. Please let the Dictator be Somali not Ethiopian or Arab.

Super cool. I remember I dropped the prince in the book thread, and that guy omar del sur went mad and told me the book was immoral:cryinglaughsmiley:

It's good that you have a critical mind. It automatically elevates your life. Philosophy and politics is something i can talk about forever. It's almost like a hobby. It's so rare to find people that are actually interested.

Again, it's cool that you like Machiavelli's work.

There is no such thing as Democracy. And there NEVER was! This is what I believe to be The TRUTH.

Democracy is a fad, it’s true, but democracy itself is one of the most flawed and dangerous systems of governance in the world. By giving the average pub going, school leaver Joe the right to vote, who knows how long the country will last before it descends into chaos. The mob will simply vote for things that will satisfy them in the present, for example, extra welfare, which will then go on to create a national debt and financial crisis. As Socrates stated, would you put inexperienced men in charge of a ship traversing on treacherous waters, or skilled and experienced sailors who have the knowledge required to sail the ship to safety?

I would put skilled and experienced sailors who have the knowledge required to sail the ship to safety. I remember reading about Socrates and Plato. I too love reading anything and every thing.

Lol it’s a hobby for me too. Luckily for me, my parents are political and my peers at university are the same, so it’s easy to talk and debate about politics with people, which I really enjoy.
Machiavelli’s work is considered controversial by many even to this day but I personally love it. He tells the bitter truth. People have a habit of killing the good guys that are trying to help them, the Christian version of Jesus being a prime example. He argued that a kind and benevolent ruler was doomed to fail and the only way humanity can prosper and be the best it can be is to be ruled by an iron fist. Islam is the same, you have to sacrifice your worldly desires for the greater good.

Exactly! And that’s where the fault of democracy lies. We’re putting inexperienced and lusty people at the helm of the ship, and as a result we are heading straight for the rocks.

Oh, No! We desperately need solutions. Can educated young Somali people help the Somali speaking peoples?

Unfortunately, Somalis aren’t a political people, only capitalistic. We are good at strengthening and progressing an economy, but this can’t survive without a stable and secure government.

Unfortunately,
The reality is just vote for a party or symbol and try to don't even understand what are the fundamental rights.
For a progress to happen is to choose a righteous leader who's prepared to take on the responsibility of government and do what's good for the people.

Democracy is an ideal. It is how people use it, makes it ‘good’ or be dragged to the black hole.

He is essentially saying you have to accept the world as it is. People that say that the book is immoral are the same naive people that buy into stupid politicians lies. They only see the world as the story that is being pushed by fox news and such.

I have very few people I can truly go in depth with when talking about politics and philosophy. But I study economics, so my peers are more interested in other things, which is understandable. I personally think that philosophy, history, politics and economics are all tied together. And if you know much in each of those different doctrines, then you will get a more accurate understanding of the world.

It's not easy to form a worldview, because the amount of information is very hard to digest when each doctrine has so many opposing teachings. But learning is a continuous lifelong process.

It’s not about the leaders, it’s about the people. Democracy literally means strength of the common people. The people are the ones who choose who gets to rule their government, and time and time again people have voted for those that they desire instead of the righteous one that will benefit society. The mob will always vote on their whims and foolish desires instead of basing their vote (which is a responsibility, not a right) on information and the greater good. The mob will vote for low taxes, which will create a funding crisis that will affect schools and hospitals.

Trump was a bad guy from the beginning, throughout the entire campaign he didn’t even bother to hide his intentions and brought out the bad in those who attended his rallies. Yet people still voted him into office. What he has done since then isn’t that shocking, we knew what he would do, what policies he would enact yet people still chose to make this man the president of an entire nation and people. This is why democracy is so flawed; the vote is utilised by the uneducated and ignorant in society to satisfy their own baseless desires and uninformed ideas about how a country should be governed.
