Why there are so few Somali-American in NYC ?

Not to mention the culture in NYC would have just been more of a headache for them. Can you imagine 100k Somalis in NYC during the 90s/2000s hip-hop era

Thank god they didn’t imagine a bunch of Abdi’s running around the Bronx getting into shootouts with madow a dominicans it would be shit show. It’s for the better if they stay in Minnesota and kill each other in that irrelevant state we don’t need the spotlight that comes with nyc.

Somalis would just start businesses and financial and moneys transfer institutions and build mosques if they were placed in any of the suburbs in New York.

There are thousands of Somalis who live in Chicago and parts of california, they are not involved in shootouts with black americans. Why do guys assume this is some default position? When in reality gang activity is not very prevalent or ethnic specific at all.

Minnesota is not an irrelevant state, it's a birth place of many American icons like Bob Dylan and prince. it's a hotbed for music, theater, visual arts and culinary innovation.

It is also home to some of the biggest companies in the US like Target, Best Buy, 3M, General Mills, Medtronic, Hormel Foods, Ameriprise Financial etc

And Somalis in minnesota don't kill eachother.

As far as crime goes, these far-right guys like to fearmonger against Somalis in Minnesota. I did the numbers when you control for age, sex, and family size -- only 15% of the male youth between 15 and early 20s do crime. While the rest do the same or even less than the national average.

If you average that out, it will shrink in size making Somalis have a 5% crime rate among Somalis or something. That is a stretch, probably close to 3.7%. I did these numbers from gang-related numbers that the state has roughly attested.

The issue is that Somali goofy gang activity is sensationalized and they live in some relatively impoverished hotspot areas in Minneapolis that racist whites like to hyper-fixate on, magnifying the focus as if the Somalis are special problem people. Gangs are driven by youth, most people exit the lifestyle by their early 20s. So even those 15% of males, within an age range, eventually exit.

The incarceration rate of "Black" people in prisons is 34% while only 5.4% of them are Muslim - Somalis make up 7.3% of the Minnesotan immigrant population. This alone debunks the notion that Somalis are extremely overrepresented, as I have seen crazy numbers by racists. I can guarantee we're not the entire 5.4%:

The ones who commit the most crime in Minnesota are Native Americans by far. Yet you never hear about it. And you should not, to be honest. Those people usually live in miskeen conditions given lands that are not productive off in the margins where economic flow is very limited.

Let's not get into the high-human capital bullshit. Americans have only cared for the productivity of their immigrants -- if they produce net positive results -- not if they have a Ph.D. Historically, immigrants that come with high skills are seen as a competition and not always as a positive; look how Indians are treated. We can't move the goalpost.

Besides, the Somali immigrant population has the lowest median age at 19 years! Nearly half the population are children. You can't compare that to American Whites that are 42 years old or other immgigrants that are well into the 30s.

You will see in the next generation that the number of graduates double or more. Other immigrants already have educational prerequisites. Those people might even have higher education from their parents who came for education specifically or came to the country with a very firm scholastic aspiration, having strong familiarity with their home countries. Many of these people came for ambition, not for survival. We will level soon. This naturally takes time.

I am half Bantu I grew up in a mostly Mexican neighborhood so my perspective is a little biased

It is probably different for Bantus as they were placed in Portland or San Diego , other Somalis largely moved there often from other states.

That city has to many ethnic groups competing for the same jobs Somalis made a good going to Minneapolis where only white middle class folk lived
