jarrab: exams: finally a word for exams instead of imtixaan. I am from xamar and I hear older people use that word

hiraab: midnight, it also means suxuur.

muudal/ dhabcaal: greedy

hinji: lifting, instead of saying, kor u qaad, you can use hinji

cagafcagaf: bulldozer/tractor

soongur: mangoose

aayatiin: future, instead of mustaqbal

afjuxuunso: interrupt

afgemi: coup d’etat; overturning

laqbo: translation of books, quran, etc. You can use it for tafsiir

aayo: stepmother

kansho: chance . instead of jaanis/ fursad. kansho is original somali word for chance

uskag: dirt, instead of the arabic word wasakh/ wasaq

rubad: life, soul

1. I asked online and someone said jarrab is actually of af maay maay origin and it means imtixaan.
2. soongur/saangur, is mongoose. another name of mongoose is also kadabshiir
3. gaboob, is old age, so for example, he grew old would be wuu gabooway. In Somali dialects some words change the b and w.
4. laqbo: Laqbo: m.l/dh Fasiridda wax kutub ku qoran la fasiro.
5. rubad has multiple meanings. one for life, throat vein and the other is soul: rubad: cunaha nafleyda. 2. Naf; ruux.
6. bantar: hilib aad caato u ah oo aan la cuni karin.
7. muudal: Muudal: m.l (-llo, m.dh) Bakhayl; dhabcaal.

I have never heard ikhtibaar. Most books that I have read says Imtixaan. I have heard jarrab. Laylis for exercises.

I went school in Egypt, both terms were used, likewise in Saudi both terms were used . Imtixaan was used more for major exams . Whilst ikhtibaar for smaller ones in Egypt , for example for a test on a unit of a subject would be referred to as ikhtibaar

We consider a word Somali when it is widely accepted but if it isn’t— it is not Somali.

ikhtibaar is not Somali language.
