Shocked at botswana, arent they one of the most developed countries in africa? :mindblown:

As for somalia they are ranked 122nd in the world šŸ« , the only metric they got for us is Life Evaluation (3-Year Average) of 4.347 šŸ˜

Top 10 in SSA, How is Nigeria up there :dwill:

Bottom 10 in SSA (Ethiopia :lolbron:)
Screenshot_20250321_133529_Chrome.jpg

In the entire SSA ranking somalia ranks 20th out of 36 countries so kind of in the middle, not too high but not too low either. :francis:

As for the East African countries shown, I made the rankings based on the report and it goes like this:

1. Mauritius
2. Mozambique
3. Kenya
4. Uganda
5. Somalia
6. Madagascar
7. Zambia
8. Ethiopia
9. Tanzania
10. Comoros
11. Zimbabwe
12. Malawi

Compared to our closest neighbours we are doing better than most of them except for kenya, I wish they could have researched the other metrics in the report for us though.

How do they measure happiness? Nordics are known for being depressed & miserable people
I think they outline it in their report that you can download as a pdf on their website, thats where they probably explain how they measure happiness in these countries.

I asked chatgpt this is what they said

ā€œThe World Happiness Report measures happiness primarily through individualsā€™ self-assessments of their lives, using a method known as the Cantril Ladder. In this approach, respondents rate their current life on a scale from 0 to 10, where 0 represents the worst possible life and 10 represents the best possible life.

Beyond these self-reported evaluations, the report also considers six key variables that help explain differences in happiness levels across countries:

1. Income: Measured by real GDP per capita, reflecting the average income of a countryā€™s citizens.

2. Healthy Life Expectancy: The average number of years individuals can expect to live in good health.

3. Social Support: The perceived availability of support from friends, family, or community members during times of need.

4. Freedom to Make Life Choices: The degree to which individuals feel they have autonomy in making decisions about their own lives.

5. Generosity: Assessed by the extent of charitable donations and the willingness to help others.

6. Perceptions of Corruption: The level of trust in public institutions and the perceived prevalence of corruption in government and business.

These variables collectively account for about three-quarters of the variation in self-reported happiness across different countries.
The data for the report is sourced from the Gallup World Poll, which conducts surveys in over 140 countries, gathering insights into various aspects of well-being and quality of life.

By combining individual life evaluations with these six variables, the World Happiness Report provides a comprehensive overview of global happiness, offering valuable insights for policymakers and researchers aiming to improve well-being worldwide.ā€

For Nations like Afghanistan it makes sense due to womenā€™s lack of rights and poverty levels.

However it doesnā€™t make sense why Botswana is so low despite its stability and iā€™m assuming higher quality of life in Africa.

Mexico is not one of happiest nations in the world they must have been surveying tourists half the kids over there are from poor families and are obese thanks to coca cola and McDonalds growth after the 90s

Suprised there isnā€™t a gulf country at the top of the list they have the highest quality of life in the world Sweden canā€™t compare

You reckon we would have got lower or higher if these gallup world poll guys surveyed somalia? Also ask it why botswana is so low I was really skeptical of their ranking it doesnt seem possible.

Honestly its understandable for the gulf for example there is lots of restrictions on the populations there and places like UAE arent really that nice when you step out of dubai and go places lile sharjah and the poor parts, I was honestly expecting maybe Oman or Qatar to be honest.

income would be average for african standards and social support is there because of qurbajoog sending money and strong qabil ties.

I think life expectancy and corruption is why the rating is low.

I love somalia but by all respects it should be near the bottom of a happiness chart. I guess its the indominable somali spirit
