It is not driven by "religious delusions" as there is no such thing superiority based one's lineage in Islam. I don't however deny that they may have decided to fabricate Arabian genealogies in order to feel closer to the Prophet (SAW) & the Sahaba (RA), or to just gain a higher status within Muslim communities (perhaps Royal Families in the Middle Ages professed a Davidic line for a similar purpose).

No one "looks down" upon a nation of which they claim descent though. SSPOT logic: "yeah, we claim descent from Adnan but who wants to be a dirty Arab".
