Back in the 90s, after the fall of the Soviets, Tajikistan, Chechnya, and Dagestan had civil wars with Russian-backed governments against Islamist rebels. The Russian-backed governments won and basically banned Islam. Just last week, an Uzbek lady was arrested by the police for teaching the Quran to children.
