To be Somali is to be Muslim. Islam is basically what unites as an ethnic group, plus it’s deeply engrained within our culture. A Somali without Islam is just another madow IMO.

One cant change their ethnic group but one can change religion. I am always puzzled/sad when i hear of a somali gaals who have left the deen, but you cant revoke someone's race

They will not have the benefits and brotherhood islam brings with in us. They will not get the unity islam brings within us. But that doesn't change the facts they are somali by blood and lineage. Somali identity interwined with islam. But no matter anything they will remain to be a somali as its an ethnicity not a religion.

Sure, they're Somali in terms of genetics. However, they will not be embraced by the community since it goes against their core value. Islam is heavily rooted in the Somali identity so I can see why many Somalis will disregard their ethnicity.
