This Dutch professor who teaches at an American university was asked the difference between Dutch students and Americans. He said a smart Dutch student will study chemistry, an American will study law.

Ten world class Somali aids researchers won't change our situation but ten talented politicians might change the political landscape for the better.

The Dutch are not as influential as the Americans but they're producing breakthroughs in agriculture not seen anywhere else while America relies on low paid Mexican workers.

Somalis need something other than politics, coming up with the cure for AIDS will inspire the whole country. It's those things that we can be proud of that build national pride and bring us together. Even sports stars are more important than politicians.

We don’t know much about them because researchers are not public figures unless they win prestigious awards abaayo. Politicians by profession are public figures.

I am from a family that looks down on social sciences and humanities, so I get where you’re coming from, but a win is a win. These politicians effect policy that effect Somali families. I applaud them. As long as it’s not a story about rape, gangs iyo balayo kale.

There are definitely worse things to be than a politician but that's not what I was getting at.

In the UK we read about the latest accomplishments in the scientific community every day. Some scientists are famous. Somalis are obsessed with politics and it's getting boring.
