I think the modern Turkish people have more or less 25 percent Turkic in their genes. The rest of their genetic makeup is native and neighboring groups.Without a shadow of a doubt, the Turks that the Sahaba dealt with in the early days of Islam, look nothing like the Turks of today. I'm pretty sure, they were mongoloid back then. Today, thanks to centuries of mixing with Greeks and Slavs, has made them lose much of their mongoloid features. But you can still see it in some Turks still. Specially in those living in the rural, central parts of Anatolia. Just check out footballer Mesut Ozil......look at those eyes.

I don't think Byzantines were Mongoloid-looking Turkic, because that part of their ancestry didn't arrive before the 11th century. And that Turkic group that came to the Anatolian basin in the 11th century were probably not entirely Mongoloid because they had considerable contact with other groups in the middle-east.
