Proto-Somali:mjlol: @Discontinous do you know what year it is on the Islamic calendar? 1438, m8, though it was being cultivated as a religion for an odd 15 years prior to the Hijra where the calendar starts.

When it did reach us, it wouldn't have spread like wildfire, nothing back in those days did with the tough distance and terrain. It's completely logical some Somalis tribes were practicing the Christianity of nearby Aksum, and others some other more local dieties and systems by different region, so it likely took a good couple hundred years for Islamization to become widespread, which is the default case when conquest isn't the catalyst.

You're claiming Islam was not acclimated to our culture as is the norm, but the opposite, that our entire culture just 1000 years and some odd hunid years ago was not anything like it is today, calling them "proto-Somalis", which is completely inaccurate.

FFS, If you go out to the bush today, Somalis out there claim Islam but barely know it. Are they ruled by culture do u suppose, or Islam? You would call that, nomadic lifestyle, post-Islamic culture?

Dude, the Somali language itself is literally 3000 years old, which implies we have obviously been an ethnic group for at least that long. The maps you guys are posting are made by wikipedia dudes using whatever sources they want.

Again, culture was not created in a vacuum. Our cultural practices predate Islam by millennia, from FGM, to pastoralism, to even the superstitions and myths i.e. zaar possession which have been syncretized with Islam relatively recently.

Even the city states on the coast were described as po pa lis that were unruly and decentralized af

The (modern) Somali language is not 3000 years old. It did not even have a script until after 1000 AD. And even then we went through several scripts. The Somali language is an old one, but it has undoubtedly gone through changes we don't know about yet.

The language family of Somali is as old as that min (proto-asiatic being 10,000 years old) but we have no record of when Somali branched out into an independent language and what it consisted of. An English man today couldn't understand an English man 1200 years ago, let alone 3000 years ago.

There is no denying that the Somali identity, culture and language truly manifested itself after the advent of Islam. Nobody has presented any showing of records of Somalis by name before Islam. We didn't come out of nowhere, I'm not saying that. There was no modern Somali people before Islam. We are not Puntites, we are not Berbers, we are Somalis. We were those people, but that's in the far past.
Just like how an American can trace his roots to Ireland, yet he is only American and his Irish culture has been somewhat absorbed into American culture and somewhat discarded

Of course Somalis weren't made over night, but I believe that the Modern Somali identity and culture rose with the advent of Islam. Thats why all our kingdoms, Sultanates, records and such go only that far back.

Though I'll admit I forgot about Berbers, the direct ancestors to modern Somalis.

Through the transition period as Islam was embraced by Somalis, we were Berbers who are the direct ancestors of the modern Somali. By the 11th century was already being used and we had clans like Hawiye which was mentioned in Merca by al-Idrisi in the 11th century.

Proto-Somali can refer to Berbers and the people after Puntites but before Somalis. What does the Islamic calendar have to do with anything?

I'm talking about the MODERN Somali culture, language and identity. The culture and language of our people go way back, but they were not centralised until the advent of Islam and the creation of the Somali identity and name for our people. And after that our culture and language went through big shifts and became the Somali culture and language we know today. The fact that afSomali wasn't even a written language until after the advent of Islam should tell you something. Before Islam we were sailors and traders, but after that increased greatly after the advent of Islam and we went head to head with the Portuguese in economic power over the Indian Ocean. Because of that seafaring we traded much more and expanded our cuisine and culture greatly.

We also traded with the Chinese and Europeans like the Dutch Empire.

Like I said, ~3000 years.

Cultures do not develop in a vacuum, it is passed down regardless of a mere conversion to a religion. Our ancient heritage is more than obvious.
