Take a break once in a while from the politics and you'll realise the world is not ending yet. Somalia has had its fair share of hard ships but there's much to be optimistic about. Sadly, this actually happened. I live just 10 minutes away from Liido Beach, and on Thursday, there was an incident involving the security forces and a young boy. They didn’t shut down the entire beach but set up a security perimeter near the hotels due to Aby’s visit. This kind of setup also happened before when the Turkish oil exploration ships arrived.

There was no protest. People didn’t know about Aby’s visit, Normally, people from different neighborhoods show up on the weekend to enjoy the beach. Unfortunately, many of them were unaware of the alternate entrances. This could have been avoided if the security forces had communicated better or directed people ahead of time to use those entrances. The security forces became overwhelmed and fired shots into the air to disperse the crowd. Sadly, a young boy was accidentally injured and passed away. It wasn’t intentional, but the stress and nervousness of the security forces in such situations are understandable.

Allowing civilians to be patrolled by militia with assault rifles and heavy belt-fed machine-guns mounted on pickup trucks like highly-mobile mini-tanks while being hopped up on the insidious drug catha edulis is probably what is more responsible than anything for this and it is endemic to the cushitic peninsula. Say what you will about its necessity, but it is a miracle more civilians aren’t killed by them.
