Kenya will transition Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps into integrated settlements in which refugees are expected to co-exist with host communities and benefit from government services as the state starts the planned closure of the two camps over security concerns.

An intergovernmental steering committee was launched Wednesday to align the transition plan with the country’s national security priorities and laws.

According to Kenya’s Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, other key priorities of the committee that will be coordinated by Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki include heightening border security and screening to prevent an influx of more refugees and enforcement of law and order in the settlements.

Asylum destination
Kenya is currently the fifth largest refugee hosting country in Africa and 13th largest asylum destination country in the world hosting over 800,000 refugees. Most of them live in Dadaab and Kakuma while 91,000 others are hosted in various towns and cities, mainly the capital Nairobi.

In 2021, the government announced that it would close Dadaab and Kakuma, which at the time were hosting over 500,000 refugees mainly from the neighbouring Somalia.

It said the camps had become avenues for gun-running and smuggling of contraband from Somalia as well as breeding grounds for terrorists. This is after intelligence reports confirmed that the 2013 Westgate attack, 2015 Garissa University and 2019 dusitD2 Complex attacks were planned and executed from Dadaab.

Mr Omollo Wednesday cautioned that the resettlement plan needs to be carried out carefully to weed out criminals seeking avenues to sneak into the country.

Turkana County has already elevated Kakuma into a municipality with Garissa Governor Nathif Jama Adam confirming that he will soon sign the municipality charter for Dadaab.

UN agencies, donors and non-governmental organisations have lauded the plan as sustainable and able to ease pressure on resources in the host communities.

It seems as if the Kenyan gov has given up on trying to repatriate the refugees and instead has decided to integrate them into the country. Dadaab will become a new city in Garissa county where locals and refugees will co-exist. Refugees will also get the right to freely travel and take part in the country (previously they were restricted to just the camps).

On the whole this is good news for the Somali (and Ogaden) population of Kenya. It will increase our voter base and census figures. This also benefits Jubbaland as OG regularly cross the border to both sides and previously the Kenyans used to make that difficult

More work force and capital for kenya,oh and enjoy the thousands of burundians roaming about in nfd

There is a shit ton of burundians in kakuma and dadaab ,thousands of burundians are gonna settle in nfd

98% of Dadaab is Somali. You think A Burundi can survive in Nfd when even other Kenyan tribes are refused entry. NFD is known for being the most racist and pure ethnic region in Kenya. Plus Dadaab is located in Ogaden land & district. They don’t allow other Somali clans to venture and settle outside of the camp let alone a foreigner.

They really needed this. Imagine living in limbo for 30 years. Kids were born there, completed their educated, got married and are now stuck there jobless. Most can’t even travel to nearby Garissa.

This is a very good move by Ruto. He is just accepting the reality. On the plus side, Garissa county gets another city with a population of almost a million. This is a massive W for OG in Garissa and Jubbaland

This is a good news. Somali Kenyans are getting much needed representation and they performed well under very harsh conditions. Somali Kenyans are becoming kingmakers in Kenyan politics.

This also stops the threat of a demographic change in JL. Now the status qou regarding population is steady.

@Abaq this is terrible news. Dadaab is majority Raxanweyn and Bantu at this point. Why would you want Garissa to become a multiclan state?

Incredibly dangerous from a demographics standpoint. Worst news I’ve heard in a long time.

I have bad news for you buddy. NFD is basically an extension of Jubbaland. It’s just the war and the border closure that messed things up lately but the OG population across the border is very fluid and they come and go
