So they basically lived in a gated area?

Their homes are gated but thats typical. Spacious villas but still third world standards. It would be an upper middle class lifestyle. They lived comfortable lives. 90% of Somalis in Somalia live horrificly. They had a maid, had connection to clan leadership/military/politics/business/education/foreign embassies and foreign organizations. They had TVs when almost no one had one back then. When they visit their families in Somalia now, their relatives live well. Diaspora don't visit their ayeyo in a jingaad or an old, run down home like most homes are in Somalia. Many refugees in the west had to have some connection to come to the west.

you know when other diaspora visited their grandparents in somalia, i was visiting my dads father in paris, he had a french citizenship i donā€™t know how but he was in djiboutian military

My parents were shocked when they came back to Xamar around 2015 and saw all the villas built. They said majority of people used to live in baraako houses made out of wood

Something like this

My grandpa is the same. They automatically gave French citizenship to anyone who was in the colonial army, as well as their children. Thatā€™s why many Djiboutians are in France now. Most of my momā€™s side of the family are there.

My mom was given the opportunity to have an easy way to French citizenship but she turned it down cause she hated France and went to North America instead lmaooo

Iā€™m glad she did tbh cause life in France is really rafaad

I guarantee you almost Half the voters that said "Villa" are lying. Also OP you should have been more specific like parents or family and in what time period.

Abos side were reer baadiyo, my ayeeyo sent him to xamar for education and to live with relatives and then the war broke out. My hooyo side were a villa family and very powerful people.
