It wasn't as much toleration as it was an acceptance, even as someone who prefers secularism can admit the people genuinly liked them. Can we really blame them? After a decade and a half of fighting Xamar was actually peaceful, people got their property back and there was a rule of law. They didn't just accept and tolerate that, they loved and wanted it.

You're very much right, as much as we secularists or nationalists like to complain about Somalia not being whole or secular, we don't really have any right to because we're the ones out there. We got no connection to the people neither back home or in the diaspora, we have no political party, no activists, no leaders and most important of all no funding. Can we then really be surprised when the country is being dominanted by former warlords, elders, wahhabis and foreign interests?

I think most people don't really care whether the government is Islamic or secular. As long as there is fairness, security and economic prosperity, people won't really care much who the president is.

Even in the west most people I know don't care about politics. Some never went to go vote in an election their entire life.

It's not enough with a rich guy going because it will be expected of him to being a patron for his clan. Instead what is needed is a political movement for nationalism, unifying people rather than dividing them. So that people stop going to clan elders to deal with crime and instead go to the police, to build a trust for these institutions by showing it's owned by us the people, that the nationstate is for us by us.

Now what a rich guy could do would be to support such a movement, so that they can have food distribution centers, radio shows and others forms of getting people to your side and then there might be some change.

The problem is that it would just be a privately owned mafia then and getting people to trust them rather than clans they've been reliant on for generations will take a cultural change and will happen over time.

Another problem is that he might just end up an autocrat maybe a benevolent one but still and autocrat, so how can you make sure that these institutions don't answer to him but to the people because that he's the one holding all the cards.
