Do you think Somalia will ever be a functioning country?

Currently, things are improving but the country is still in a terrible state and the smallest thing can cause the civil war against. How do you think the future will be?

The next 5 yearsare crucial, the next president has to work 100 × harder than any president before him including pre war presidents. He'll have to build the capacity of all Somalis in a meaningful way. If the next leader does this they'll destroy Shabaab without firing a bullet and they'll end the migrant crisis too, saving many lives.

It'll take time and hard work, baby steps I guess. @Lostbox Gintoki picture though.
There's supposedly a cuban who is stuck in a time warp of the somalia-ethiopian war who hangs out around here.
lol'd, I think I know who you're on about.

Suicidal men adore me.
Yes. It can only go upwards from here. Somalis are tired and want their country to work. I know plenty of people who are considering moving back and opening up something or contributing to the rebuilding of our country.

Not only do I believe a functioning state is within our grasp, I believe with the right institutions and policies we can have a Somali economic miracle and reach upper middle income status in a generation.

The growth of a robust private sector since 1991 is one of the few positives of the civil war. I can see companies like Dahabshiil and Hormuud and other domestic companies dominating the Horn and even Africa as long as we provide the platform for Somalis to make use of their natural entrepreneurial spirit.

Long gone are the days the only job you'll find is in the public sector like in the rest of the third world. Ethiopia for example is basically a Marxist state where all the land belongs to the government and state owned monopolies can produce inferior products and charge whatever they want with absolute impunity.

Long live commerce.

Capitalism will set us free.

@Bahal

One can't create a high standard of living society with pure capitalism in Somalia considering the masses of cheap labour nearby. There should be strong government involvement managing the economy and labour laws.

If Somaliland doesn't get recognized by 2020 it will probably never get recognized.

Tick tack, time is running out.

Corruption and qabyaalad are the biggest obstacle to Somalia's path to prosperity. If Somalia can overcome these hurdles, then we'll hopefully see Somalia emerge as major African power again.
