Do you think Somalia will ever be a functioning country?

Suicidal men adore me.
Corruption and qabyaalad are the biggest obstacle to Somalia's path to prosperity. If Somalia can overcome these hurdles, then we'll hopefully see Somalia emerge as major African power again.

I completely agree. If we get rid of qabil naturally corruption will also minimize. I find this to be so super weird because we're one of the worlds most homogeneous countries. Apart from the bantus we're all one ethnic group. Qabil shouldn't be a factor.

@Bahal

One can't create a high standard of living society with pure capitalism in Somalia considering the masses of cheap labour nearby. There should be strong government involvement managing the economy and labour laws.

Regulation will only hurt job creators, the wealth will eventually trickle down. I propose guest worker programs to take advantage of mass cheap labor as Africa replaces China and Asia for outsourcing firms. Labor laws and environmental regulations are first world luxuries.

For example, despite the lack of a functioning state, we have the cheapest telecommunication rates in Africa. Our open economy, competitiveness, and innovation will see Somalia become an economic powerhouse.

I just learned AS is nine thousand strong, who let this happen? :drakewtf:

It creeps up on you, in 2009 no one had heard of these people and by 2011 they controlled most of Mogadishu. Slowly they consolidated and now they are a full fledged mafia collecting taxes on road blocks all over southern Somalia. UN estimated last year that they collected $60 million just in Lower Juba last year, imagine how much they are collecting in the rest of the country. They will be around for quiet some time with the amount of money they have accumulated, this is now a protection racket.

I don't see in the near because I don't see anyone even close to attempting to tackling the real issues.

Somali biggest issue isn't tribalism, it's mistrust created by foreign systems.

Somalis have always been qabiil minded people, all they need is to cooperate and share Rather than exploit each other

My solution would be to get rid of clan federalism and have rotating Presidency for each major clan with one term limit of 5 years.

It could easily happen if someone genuinely wanted to lead the Somali people and build the country. These politicians dan kagama jirto that's what you have to understand before you despair.

Most likely will not in the foreseeable future. Anybody who works for change will be killed or chased out of xamar. You know how many political assassinations there are a year? It's not even normal wallahi.

That's why it has to be the president spearheading changes. These MPs, activists and journalists who uncover corruption in the government are targeted. If the presidency makes transparency a priority and isn't involved in corruption like they have been, a lot of those deaths could've bern avoided.

Yeah. Horta why hasn't raxanweyn been given a chance at presidency? It seems like that Jawaari guy does a lot of good and doesn't have a bad rep (that I know of). He's also one of the oldschool politicians @Bahal @Mckenzie what do yall think about Odayga Jawaari?

Jawaari is highly educated and he isn't a qabiilist. They want a corrupt man who'll allow them to grease each other's palms and let them hire their illiterate clansfolk into senior positions without argument. Darod and Hawiye are the most corrupt clans in the South.

I think he would bring a lot of change to somalia. The guy has an amazing political career and has deep links with the UN. I think he's the only person with in the gov that's real about somalinimo. I might be wrong but I actually like the guy :nvjpqts:. I also think dir or raxanweyn should be given a lot of representation in the government. It's usually the people who have the most to lose that fight the hardest for better days. Just my two cents:yacadiim:

I agree 100%. He respects understands laws, democracy and development. He genuinely wants change and he speaks both most common dialects of af Somali fluently as well as speaking English. I think Dir are being sidelined because of Somaliland , they don't want to rock the boat.

:mjcry:There's a lot of truth in that.....But im from SL though so:kanyeshrug:

You should not be happy with the status quo in Somaliland. Being stable next to your world reknowned for dysfunction neighbour isn't something to be proud of.

Somalias economy is probably bigger than that of Somaliland and that should worry you considering the current circumstances.
