Dubai Somalis

No harm. Its just that thats what my sources told me. Those who live in North America (Canada, US) have said that before, salaries were good and you could negotiate for better benefits, but now that isn't the case. Reason being REER Europe among others are willing to work for less, and companies then aren't going to offer substantial pay to those in NA (basically, they're making the same, or less). So many have opted to stay here.

Sources hmmm. A university grad would never undersell themselves like that. Besides most jobs advertise the expected salary. No-one will say "I will take £4k less if you hire me."

Yes, sources. People who work in various fields in the ME have told me this. It has also been corroborated by many recruiters as well. And another thing, don't always believe what you read. The expected salary can go either up or down. Some companies will literally advertise one salary, then say that they'll hire you with a lower salary. Anyways, my point wasn't to bash any diaspora, but to say that going to the UAE to make lots of money is no longer on the table. Go for the lifestyle benefits.

Anybody been to Dubai here ? Are all the Somali people that live there fobs or do they look like Somalis in the west

I travelled to Dubai in August last year

For bussiness travel . At first I was hesitant but for bussiness wise and opportunities why not and leave the continent and experience this mythical utopia

I was there for 2 weeks bussiness related , it's quite soulless city tbh and fucking expensive but I liked the fact despite the unforgivable heat AC were everywhere , the night was lively,
not gonna lie the Skyscrapers were crazy spectactle I saw millions of Indians ma India baa war bisinka

Somalis live good in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi but in Dubai many live a rough life especially some people who are born in that country have no statuses and can be removed at any given time
I seen beggars especially in the gold souq waan yaabay wlahi.

The Somalis ranges from temporarily staying or living to make ends meet its not easy life
You can find Kenyan/Tanzanian/South African Somalis who frequently travel for bussiness , they go back and forth , then you have Somalis straight outta Somalia who are mostly young men stranded smoking ciggerates in the Somali enclave most of them are stressed , then you have Western Somalis who are mostly staying at hotels and are probably transit to somewhere
And those who permanently live there , most gold owners have some statuses but not full citizenship
The most dystopian Somalis I ever saw in my life

I second what ebu said, they didn't straighten their hair but they often talked about hair masks and face masks at least among the girls. I stayed with family for a few months so I'm prob not the best person to ask.

The poor ones live near suuq dahab (gold souk) I have met countless of them in 2017 when I was in Dubai for a night. I gave them $100 as a I was transit for over 10 hours luckily the driver was mj and he showed me around Dubai/Abu Dhabi. I met these guys in the airport of Dubai they usually stay there to pick up people and I was like I need a showers he was like ur welcome akhi long story short these guys live a horrible life.

The money ain't what it used to be. Its a nice place (went there myself) and I'd live there but there's alot of gaajo now (i.e. the reer UK, indians and filipinos are willing to take any job at any salary just to work there). Go if you want to live there and say you work in "Dubai."

Why are you including rer UK in the same context as philipinos and Indians. Western passport holders specially the UK hold the best of jobs are highly preferred and the salary is much higher. There is preference for anything british hence the large amount of UK expats here. The British prefer the UAE because of relaxed work life balance and tax free salary compared to back home.

Yes it is. Any westerner will make way more money here than in their own countries. You can argue it was better in the past but it's still better than working to death in Canada or the UK for 3 times less.

The irony that we would settle for less. Uk Somalis are more qualified than their North American counterparts.

@Desert Flower your sources don’t sound reliable to say the least xx

The Americans/Canadians expect a higher salary in lets say a teacher or engineering position, and UK citizens tend to bring the salaries down. So most companies go with the cheaper western option. It's not what advertised, it's was negotiated in the interview process.

And there is this vibe in Dubai that UK citizens love living there more than anyone else.

Qualified more in what way? Education or experience?

Both. Education is more accessible here and a more established community means more mobility.

Are you talking Somalis from UK and America? I'm talking Americans and British in general.

As for education being more accessible and a established community (don't know what you mean by that), that point is moot in this instance as the jobs people apply for here, you need to have a degree and some experience. So that would mean most people across all nationalities are qualified as its requirement to be so.

Well obviously I’m talking about Somalis since it’s Somalispot.

I was referencing the point made equating Somalis from uk to low skilled migrant workers from Asia.
