Gabay iyo Geel is the most valued thing in Somali culture. Poetry in itself is an art, if it's such a low form of creativity could you ever produce a poem with greater meaning than Hadraawi. Hadalka waa tix iyo tiraab sxb. The Arabs against Islam even tried to disprove the holiness of the Quran by coming up with poetry (though they failed miserably).

Unfortunately from what we know, most Somalis were illiterate. Whilst either's built great structures, conquered lands, wrote books ie Art of War, produced crafts. Somalis were engaged in meaningless gabay, which we have nothing to show for. The coming of Islam showed us how useless Poetry is. When the Arabs were illiterate their only expertise was poetry, however after Islam, they moved away from poetry to other more sophisticated arts such as craftsmanship and philosophy.

I am totally against this Kacaan narrative that Somali culture is only "geel" and"gabay". It distorts our history and paint's us only as a bunch of camel herding illiterates who's only contribution was useless gabay and uncivilized tribal dances like dhaanto. It takes out a large chunk of Somalia's history, from coastal cities, ancient monuments and Somalia's place as an ancient trading nation.
