I believe you don't understand the full capicity of FGM as comparison to male circumcision. These two are like comparing a small hill to an ice berg the two are very different procedures. Many men make the excuse in accepting FGM by comparing it male circumcision. The clit sole purpose is to provide pleasure it is comparison to the male head in sensitivity. If a woman chooses to have some cosmectic surgery that's fine as long as she is in the consenting age, most cosmetic surgery is to reduce the labia majora or tighten the vaginal cannal, However I have never heard of a woman actively seeking to remove her clit, therefore I cannot understand why a woman would want clitrodectomy ? When majority are educated in that the clit is the most important part in achieving sexual satisfaction, it was made illegal because of young girls being exposed to FGM without a voice. It is classed as child abuse, now for male circumcision I do not understand why it is permissible in the west witour consent, partly due to the ancient customs that are presently embedded in many religions e.g. Judaism and Islam but the procedure does not cause extensive damage as FGM. As a matter of fact men as they age may be exposed to conditions called (phimosis) or (balanitis) tightening of the foreskin. Therefore it is medicaly benificial to undergo male circumcision for hygiene reasons. However it is a voilation against women to undergo FGM knowing its extensive harm long term, that is why it is illegal. If something harms you why would you legalise it ? Research has shown women who profess great depression in undergoing FGM, have resentment when it comes to sex etc. I can post you a few journals. If you wish to delve further in this topic, many modern scholars advocate against FGM practice.

Depression and sexual inadequacy faced by women exposed to FGM (link)

A journal so don't try and say it's not worthy of quoting.

The modifications done to the genitalia are diverse and so will the effects, furthermore when done in a medical setting the health risks are substantially reduced than when these procedures are carried out in a non medical setting.

WHO defines FGM as procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons, so under this definitions FGCS does indeed come under what is termed as FGM. Now the contradiction lies in making a distinction between where the procedure is carried out and the underlying reason why it's performed. It's because of this reason that hardly anyone considers white women as being "mutilated" when they chose to undergo procedures that alter their genitalia.

I don't if you know but according to the UK fgm legislation adult women who hail from communities where female circumcision is common can not have any procedures done on their genitalia.Meaning as a somali woman you have no autonomy over your body as the freedom to choose has been taken away from you even Leyla Hussein recognizes this contradiction. take a look at what she wrote

"Did you know that the UK FGM bill forbids me, as an adult, to have any procedure done on my genitals, while any white British woman can walk into a clinic and casually cut hers? Still confused? Me too"

When is it a choice?

Only cadan women have the "choice" not you or any other woman who hails from such communities. If you're up for an exciting experiment try asking your cadan colleagues whether or not as a somali women you can opt to have genital cosmetic surgery & why uk law allows only white women to alter their genitalia ?

The reason why i brought up male circumcision was to understand why the issue of consent suddenly doesn't seem to be that important but when it comes to girls it is ? In a country where circumcision is the norm for both men & women do you think parents are going to give girls preferential treatment whereby they ask for their permission before they have them circumcised ?

You also mentioned the issue of having a voice but where is the voice for women who wish to have female circumcision don't they have a say when it comes to their own bodies ? why do you and others like you want to impose your world views on women who have different views than you ? you are entitled to your opinions but so as they. Their voice matters as much so you should be considerate enough to understand that they don't share your views.

Let me ask you is the depression and sexual inadequacy a result of the practise or a result of how it was done ? To elaborate more on my question do you think the results would have been the same had the procedures been done in a medical setting ? What you fail to realize is that majority of the health risks that are associated with FGC/FGM are due to the way they were carried out. This can be got rid of easily by medicalising the procedure thereby eliminating health risks that arise as a result of the traditional way of cutting.

There's more to this issue then what you're willing to concede as it's not as black & white, you may wish to portray it as such but that doesn't make it factual. I'm interested to continue discussing a sensitive issue such as this one but as long as our emotions don't dictate the discussion itself. Bal ka waran taladas ???
