In May 15, 1943 the Somali Youth League (SYL) was founded by 13 visionary somali youngsters in a house on via roma street in Xamarweyne, Mogadishu
They swore to adress three issues:
seek the unification of the greater Somalia (Somaliweyn), fight tribalism (qabyalad) and promote public literacy and awareness on social issues.
The SYL led Somalia to independence in 1960 and won the first general election where SYL member Aden Abdullah Osman became the first president of the republic.
The original 13 founding members came from diverse backgrounds:
