Founding Fathers of Somalia - SYL

In May 15, 1943 the Somali Youth League (SYL) was founded by 13 visionary somali youngsters in a house on via roma street in Xamarweyne, Mogadishu
They swore to adress three issues:
seek the unification of the greater Somalia (Somaliweyn), fight tribalism (qabyalad) and promote public literacy and awareness on social issues.

The SYL led Somalia to independence in 1960 and won the first general election where SYL member Aden Abdullah Osman became the first president of the republic.

The original 13 founding members came from diverse backgrounds:

Yaasin Xaaji Osman Sharmarke (Chairman) - Majerteen
Mohamed Xirsi Nuur - Majerteen
Mohamed Sheekh Osman - Tunni
Ali Hassan - Majerteen
Osman Geedi Raage - Abgaal
Dahir Xaaji Osman Sharmarke- Majerteen
Abdilqaadir Sheikh - Tunni
Mohamed Faarax Hilowle - Abgaal
Khaliif Huurdo Ma'alin - Sheikhaal
Mohamed Abdalla Hassan - Habar Awal Isaaq
Dheere Xaaji Dheere - Reer Xamar
Xaaji Mohamed Hussein - Dabarre
Mohamed Ali Nuur - Reer Xamar

Dheere Xaaji Dheere - Reer Xamar

Mohamed Ali Nuur - Reer Xamar

It seems the first SYL was mostly made up of the educated elites of Benadiir ( Abgaal, Reer Xamar ,Tunni, Dabarre) and the educated elites of the Sultanates of Majerteniya + Hobyo (Majerteen).
All of the founders apart of Mohamed Abdalla Hassan were also from italian somaliland.

They had all the requirments to form the basics of a state, but somalis are not new to statehood and all vied for their clan to gain power until 1960's they were for a large part unified in spirit. It all crashed down with the death of Sharmake. Had barre not taken over we may have been a somewhat strong democracy.

Somalia could have became a De-Facto one party state with SYL dominating every election like Japan with LDP dominating. @anon2

They may have not achieved much in their first few years, but another 5-10 years down the line they could have been much more efficient and long term stability through democracy would have been provided.

Mentioning someones qabil isn't tribalism sxb. Qabil is an integral part of our society, it should just never be taken too far as that would be self destructive for all of somali society.
Personally I'd be okay with someone mentioning qabil when it comes to politcians. Laakin I heard SYL members swore on the Quran they would never identify with their qabil only Somali. Thus I doubt this man would care if someone was correcting someone about his qabil.

Politics before siad barre AUN was dominated by Abgaal/mudulood and Majeerteen as you can see here from the founders of SYL. 4 MJ men and 3 Abgaal. First president was laandhere ciise mudulood

I blame my late uncle General daud hersi AUN, the founder of the SNA, for introducing siad barre to the stage same way I blame my uncle Sheihk shariif for introducing farmaajo to politics

@reer_ugaas_hussein is right. these great men wouldn’t have wanted people to care about their tribes, their entire policy was to fight against tribalism. Unfortunately we will never see an era in somali politics like that again.

The 1950s Somalia Italians representation was roughly equal between Irir, Raxanweyn, and Jabarti i.e. one those groups was grassly overrepresented and representation became even more lopsided after 1960 because the British also gave 40% of seats to Jabartis/Irir even though Isaaq had 80% of the votes so all in all the Jabartis ended up being double overrepresented whereas the southern Irir were undertepresented but northern Irir overrepresentation compensated for them but nothing could compensate for Isaaq underrepresentation this why the 1960s mafia republic was bound to collapse Cigaal snd other northerners werr undermining SNM type rebelion in the 1960s

Representation does matter but youre right you will never see another Cigaal undermining his own people and favoring gross overrepresentation of minorities especially when the North and South reunite. The 4.5 formula made things even worse by cmusclassyfying Isaaq as Irir and then underrepresenting the combined Irir/Isaaq group. Your best hope for being overrepresented is Quixotic ictitaafists and southern Irir/Raxanweyne dominated Somalia Italiana parting ways which Im against a true unionist unlike the flan confederalists and agoobta Formaggio undermining unity as well as the XSM federal government

I agree. The politicans back then were savy and reer magaal. Qabil and qabyaalad was looked down upon and seen as reer baadiyo culture . Even the people back then. People back 1960-91 xamar grew up not caring about the clan of their nejghbours

1960 election. SNL/NUF are beesha dhexe Soomaliland with about 80% of the vote

USP are 2 groups agoonta eastern Sool/Badhan and the 2nd group northern Irir aka western Awdal. The 2 minorities have less than 20% of the vote but 40 % of the seats
