How are the media doing in Toronto? Journalist seeking your opinion.

Hey, I'm a journalist in Toronto. For a diverse city, our media are pretty white and mainstream. What kind of job do you think the local media are doing? Who is doing a good job of representing issues important to your community? Who is doing a bad job? Have you seen any news you've found destructive or hurtful? I would love to hear from you about print, broadcast, and social media news sites. All of it. If you prefer to talk privately, please follow me and I'll follow back so we can DM. Thank you!

I think our media is doing great in this city. They update us with what’s going on like the weather, crimes, what’s happening etc.

What does that mean to you? Do you feel those stations represent your community?
I feel like those stations do exactly what they are supposed to do, maintain certain narratives about certain people in the city.
In my life, I have never seen a news report about a successful person of color, much less a suceessful person of color interacting with the community that bred them.
Its always showing people who know how to stay on code or people that have very little awareness of the political and economic realities that drive this city.

No, Toronto Star is Liberal hogwash and Toronto Sun is anti immigrant. Globe and Mail is the best.

Cp24 is what I am used to because growing up we had the tv set on the channel every morning getting ready for school. But I prefer CBC content wise they do a better job reporting the total story

Toronto media is biased heavily to the left imo there are 3 that aren't I find. CTV (Centre left) or AM 640 (Right) or AM 1010 (Centre Right)

I'm working on a story about successful people (who happen to be "of color") right now.

But I agree with your comments. Having worked for years in MSM I can tell you no one actually sits down at a meeting and says, "we need to maintain this narrative about this community." But we do operate within assumptions and stereotypes and also have blinders on to the issues in many communities. I have personally felt this as someone who has pitched stories about such communities. It's deeply unfair and I'd like to work to correct it. I'm wondering what media you rely on to get stories about your community. Maybe there are some non-MSM local news sites that do a better job?

Small media outlets definitely dont have a war room to plan narratives I agree. I would bet money that large media outlets discuss certain narratives they want to push. I listen to a wide variety of media nearly any kind and I just remember to take things with a pinch of salt.

Every media conglomerate in Canada is well-known to be biased toward the right or the left, and both effectively achieve the same goal of promoting an image of an inferior person of colour. Whether it's blatant fascist sensationalism from right wing rags such as The Rebel or The National Post, or stories of people of colour only succeeding through affirmative actionesque-BLM type pieces on pseudo-progressive platforms of the left, it's always the same story

At least the idiotic right paints all of us in the same colour; groups such as Vice seem to have an agenda of making racist productions while hiding behind the facade of hiring women of colour to work with white men living out their plantation fantasies

MashaAllah what you're doing is commendable @Lois Lane , but I think that things will not change until people of colour achieve the economic, and then the political clout to fashion our image image through our own media. People like you will need to continue working up the corporate media ladder in order to change the situation on the ground

Canadians should thank their lucky stars that Canada is out of reach for Rupert Murdoch. Otherwise, Justin Trudeau would’ve never been in power. He controls more than 70% of our print media and also owns the biggest TV cable company in Australia.

Who controls the media in Canada?

The government

The national broadcaster is the CBC and is government funded. Print is open and radio is also dominated by the CBC

@The Kaiser

Merci Sxb, I thought you had commercial TV stations. I only watched one CBC program called, “The Fifth Estate” on YouTube and I thought that they were very similar to our national broadcaster the ABC. I think they covered very respectfully and sensitively a documentary about the killings of young Somalis in Canada called ‘The Life and Death of Abdinasir Dirie’. It’s hard to judge a tv network by only one documentary, is that how you see it guys?
