Somalis in the West connecting with those back home is not inherently problematic, as long as it occurs discreetly, with a focus on unity and efforts to lobby for development and assistance for our homeland.
If a Jewish individual met with Netanyahu, no one in a position of power would criticize it. Yet, when Somalis engage in similar actions, it is often viewed with suspicion.
The African American community faces a crisis. Despite being one of the oldest ethnic groups in modern America, they are often surpassed by newer immigrant groups within just two generations. The rise of Somalis can feel like an affront, especially when their perception is shaped by social media, racist propaganda, and Hollywood stereotypes.
They fail to recognize that we are arguably one of the foremost cultural and civilizational peoples in sub-Saharan Africa. Our only true competitors are our distant kin from the highlands. From transitioning from pastro-agrarian economies to global commerce, and from establishing bureaucracies to manage our numerous kingdoms, our history and theirs are not on the same level.
