yeah they they them around 7 billion worth of military equipment between 1977 and 1978.Barre was not exagerating when he was talking about the advanced weapons Ethiopans were being supplied with by USSR-Cuba, after all.
Bookmarked/Archived, will come back to this, thanks.
It also against the claims of Siad being driven by emotions when going to the war. His early policy of arming Somalis in the region and even trying to get them to launch the initial assault goes against such a view.I read the thread and its actually crazy how much the soviets and cubans bailed them out the ethiopians were truly saved by the soviets/cuba alone if they didnt come we would have been marching into addis.

Siad Barre opts to negotiate on the Western Somali region ( Ogaden ) In the early years of the military government, Siad wanted to focus on the domestic affairs of the nation, upon the Derg revolution in 1974 Siad Barre wanted to open negotiations on the western Somali region however Marxist Ethiopia was in no mood to negotiate on the table. I'd like to bring this thread back again but @Idilinaa do you think its possible that the Unitef States and Saudi Arabia paid and supported Barre to invade Ethiopia in the first place? America defintely didn't want the Red Sea to be in complete Soviet control and Barre was quick in taking American support after the war as well.
They werenโt aligned during the onset of the invasion but then switched due to the soviets not supporting their invasion. America gave significant defensive aid, but didnโt aid our invasion since at the time it looked as though we were breaking international law and they wouldโve struggled to get more support for advanced aid through congress. The carter administrations foreign policy, was drastically different than other American presidents during the Cold War such as Richard Nixon who wouldโve most likely gave us the support we needed.Somalia was not aligned with the United States when they invaded Ethiopia. They also didn't get any military support from them during the war.
So No.
Saudis were American puppets so whatever America wanted saudi supported it but the Saudis I'm assuming had some leeway with the Americans.I'd like to bring this thread back again but @Idilinaa do you think its possible that the Unitef States and Saudi Arabia paid and supported Barre to invade Ethiopia in the first place? This was during carter? He was always seen as a docile old man. They werenโt aligned during the onset of the invasion but then switched due to the soviets not supporting their invasion. Yeah he was the only president trying to de escalate during the Cold War era we were unlucky af. I think he only got elected due to the Americans being tired of constant warfare. Nixon and Reagan hated the commies and wouldโve supported us 100%. This was an ignorant move from siad tbh he assumed American support even though it wasnโt implied during the carter administration. Shouldโve waited until Reagan was in office he supported siads administration with weapons throughout our internal conflicts in the 80s and early 90s. However I strongly believe if there was a HOA proxy war at that time it wouldโve been devastating. Soviet and American support would neither dry up and it would be long war, South Yemen wouldโve most likely also declared war against us , and you can count on the Cubans still being there and even perhaps Russian soldiers. I think we wouldโve won considerable support from the western bloc however including soldiersThis was during carter? He was always seen as a docile old man.
If we had done the war in the Reagan administration he'd have dumped billions.
