Italian colonialism set us back

Anyway I better never hear somalis or any other people imply that we benefited from colonial rule. They impoverished us when they restricted us from trading, destroyed many of our cities and massacred our people. That is their legacy. None of that equals good governance.

Wow I didn't realize they restricted our ability to sell goods and trade. I also had thought one of the reasons somali scripts hadn't taken off was because of clanism. But just reading this it really looks like they went to great lengths to keep us from developing. I can't imagine how much we must have went backwards in the first half of the 20th century if this is what was happening across somalia. Especially when you combine this with the somalk massacre in harar and all the raids by Ethiopians.

The contrast is really stark, especially when you read about how the British sponsored and financed the development of hausa and swahili publishing in the early 20th century. They were the ones to standardize it and hold competitions to find the best stories and publish them.

brits didnt really bother sl as much at the time it wasnt where most of the activity in somalia was happening
That's not really true . They didn't go into the interior much. But they banned somalia from importing weapons and they basically took control over coastal trade in the north.

I suspect they also limited a lot of stuff from being imported into somalia besides guns. Since I've always found it strange why we never developed a printing press in the early 20th century.

It's kind of crazy to think they spent 200 million italian lira on military expenditure. I just looked up how much that would be worth in today's euros and it's about 200 million euros which is like 300 million dollars.

Yes Italians basically brought nothing of value to Somalia in the long run. Even the few things they did built that could have been useful down the line like Hafun's salt factory and Jowhar's railway system was dismantled by the British during WW2. What is even worse is that the Italy was planning on transforming Somalia into a settler colony like they were doing with Libya. Its beyond me how any Somali would think colonialism was beneficial.

The British were similar but after WW2 at least they backed the SYL and support Greater Somalia with Ernest Bevin.

Hargeisa was a tuulo when Britian left, Italy built roads, railways, and a better city. People who say Italy brought no value are copers. Btw I am not endorsing colonization just be honest about shit.

At most you can attribute a few buildings in the city to them (arc de triumph, catholic church etc), few roads and the railways was dismantled by the brits and it didn’t even cover all of italian somaliland. But the city as we knew it pre-civilwar was expanded and rebuilt after the italians left..

@Idilinaa went into detail about this here: https://www.somalispot.com/posts/4257570/

Wait 💀 I just checked the thread I linked to and in there YOU yourself are saying Mogadishu was made into the city it was by somalis (the kacaan). Why are you deliberately spreading misinformation on here?

i’m convinced he’s trolling, claiming that Arabs & Italians built Mogadishu, he was even claiming in another thread Somalis don’t do farming, it’s like he gets a kick out of spreading misinformation.
