Congratulations to Ahmed Hussen for his victory! The Somalis here in Toronto are in a very upbeat mood today, with the election of the first Somali MP as well as a solid Liberal majority in Parliament.

Don't you ask yourself why the "Somali" community is so divided? Why is it, say Indians for example, with all of their diverse and distinct ethnic groups, can all rally behind an Indian MP and get them elected, but "Somalis" who are allegedly of the same ethnic group and heritage cannot seem to ever come together? Doesn't this raise fundamental questions to you about what exactly is a "Somali"? If Indians of completely different ethnic groups act more like kin than "Somalis" of the same ethnic group, then clearly something is amiss, no?

I'm also not trolling about Ahmed Hussen. Anyone who knows him and doesn't have a stake in his campaign will tell you the honest truth that he doesn't believe in "Somalinimo" and neither do much of those that supported him in his riding. He's just using that failed concept out of political convenience, just like that other user "Duchess" here. She'll call for Somalinimo when it benefits her Tol, but will discard it and ridicule it at a moment's notice. Even if she is apart of the blessed family, there isn't anything more I hate on this Earth than two-faced hypocrites.

Finally, Ahmed Hussen won without the help of the "Somali" community. Even if he could get all of their votes, it wouldn't have counted for much. He invigorated the community and is finally reaping the benefits of years of service to that community. I only wished he was more open about his true beliefs to the "Somali" community.

So why can't the same exist for Somalis? Why can't Somalis be authentically Canadian while also holding onto their Somali heritage?

He's a hardcore Puntlander and Darodist, though he can get a little too big headed with the "MJ royalty" thing at times. He most certainly does not believe in Somalinimo, and the fact you think he does shows you know absolutely nothing about him and only spoke to him a few times as an outsider at one of his events/rallies. Of course in that case he's going to tell you what you want to hear, seeing as he is a politician after all. Ask Abdi Gaal on here as well. Can't say I'm too familiar with that organization, but it's highly doubtful. He's the type of guy who is very subtle with his qabyaalad, and will make political maneuvers in such a sly way that it can be defended by his deluded fanboys like Kaafiye. We reject modern qabilism which is based on the belief of unity due to common lineage or supremacy of one bloodline over the other but we accept the positive aspects of qabil and are united with qabilists in a common cause to see the advancement of our political unit. I would rather align myself with a non-Darood/Harti/MJ who shares the same political beliefs as me over someone I supposedly share a 10th or 25th ancestor with. Toronto's Ahmed Hussen 1st Somali-Canadian elected to Parliament
Victory a sign 'there's hunger for real change,' says Liberal elected in York South-Weston

Election night was a night of firsts, not only for the country but also for Toronto's Somali community.

Not only was Justin Trudeau the first son to follow his father's footsteps into the Prime Minister's Office in Ottawa, Toronto's Ahmed Hussen became Canada's first-ever MP of Somali descent.

On Tuesday, Hussen defeated NDP MP Mike Sullivan, winning the York South-Weston riding. He told CBC News that "the feeling hasn't sunk in, it's going to take time."

Born and raised in Somalia, the lawyer and community activist called his victory "a symbolic and real manifestation of the openness of the Liberal Party to new Canadians."

Hussen is one of 20 visible-minority MPs elected in the GTA Monday night, and a record number elected across Canada.

"The Canadian-Somali community has challenges with youth jobs, youth violence and I have some experience in those fields to try and make a difference," he said. "But I'll be working hard for all the residents of York South-Weston, regardless of their heritage."

"Sure, I'm proud to be the first Somali-Canadian to get into elected office but my history has indicated my ability to work with everybody and I intend to do that [here]," he said.

The father of two says it was humbling to be given a vote of confidence Monday night and that the result confirmed his belief that "there's a hunger out there for real change."

He told CBC he felt the Liberal's platform represented a change "away from a decade of missed opportunities like immigration. [The Conservatives] have made a mess out of immigration over the last five years," said Hussen, also pointing to jobs, transit and social housing as areas the Liberals could help drive.

Hussen said he was inspired to run for office after noticing the country was distinctly different from the Canada of the 1990s.

'Mean government dividing Canadians'

"It was a very mean government that was dividing Canadians, a government in Ottawa that wasn't a true partner on affordable housing," he said. "I saw a government that wasn't at the table on the big issues that matter to Torontonians."

Hussen, who lived in Regent Park and helped spearhead the neighbourhood's multi-million dollar revitalization project, calls his riding a microcosm of Canada.

Election 2015 was also historic because it ushered in the highest number of female MPs ever. In total, 88 women were elected – 50 for the Liberals, 18 for the NDP, 17 for the Conservatives, two for the BQ and one for the Green Party.
