Population doesn’t have much to do with literacy rates. Greater population = greater human capital to go towards increasing literacy rates. Since they have a higher population, you would expect them to have more teachers etc to deal with that higher population

When economists looked at night lights as a proxy for economic growth, Ethiopia was the country that most significantly overstated its GDP growth between 2002-2021. They seem to have exaggerated their economy's size by something like 2x.

This means that Ethiopia's real debt to GDP ratio is 2x higher than reported, 76% rather than 38%.
