Before anyone comments, I only want responses from women. Otherwise, I would have posted in the general section. Please refrain from adding your two cents if you are a man.
A woman was denied iftar at a mosque solely because of her gender. They couldn't even extend the grace to offer her a cup of water or dates.
The mosque posted a response on Instagram but took it down when people started tagging local news outlets.
First of all, why do some Muslim men misquote Hadiths to support a specific narrative? While it's true that women can receive the same rewards for praying at home, this does not mean that praying at home is always obligatory. It is a matter of grace. Muslim women are often responsible for cooking, cleaning, and caring for children, and we thank God that our religion is merciful by not requiring us to go to the mosque. However, it is still an option. It’s convenient how people overlook the Hadith that says, "Do not prevent women from their share of the mosques" (Sahih Bukhari 900). It is very clear what these men are doing is haram. By misquoting Hadiths to stop women from attending places of worship, they are gatekeeping the religion, and this behaviour is both harmful and ignorant.
Oxford mosque also had the audacity to respond by saying, "Please continue your support and donate generously." But ask yourself, who has been working hard to prepare over 300 meals for iftar for the past 10 years? And which group of people usually donates to mosques? The answer is women. Muslim men expect women to contribute so much, yet they deny them basic rights and representation at every level. It’s telling that, as soon as people began tagging news outlets, they took down the Instagram post. Mosques in the West depend on Western laws and values to build their institutions, so they understand the importance of this. Yet, when it comes to Muslim women, they are willing to disregard these values.
Fortunately, Oxford mosque is located in the West, where laws protect women. This is not their home country, household or culture, so they cannot impose cultural practices in places where women have fought for their rights. They will face consequences because sexism is illegal in the UK. This is why Muslim women should not feel offended when misogynistic men label them as "feminists." This is not an insult, it is an honour. These women have fought hard to ensure their rights are protected, and while it’s not perfect, it’s something. We should follow their example and stay on code. We must refuse to visit, support, or donate to any institution that denies women their rights and representation. This applies both in the west and back home.
Senator Saredo Jeyte said it very clearly a while back and her words will always remain relevant.
