No. FGS don’t seem to have been onboard with the plans of Ethiopia having a military base in SL. Since SL is internationally recognized as part of Somalia, it may result in diplomatic spat between Somalia and Ethiopia. A gamble Abiy has taken.

He can’t let it slide either. Given the public outcry and the reactions from former Somali leaders and politicians associated with his government, it’s expected that he will condemn this deal. The question is what he will do aside from that to express his displeasure with Ethiopia?

You’re right. The navy/military outpost may come into fruition regardless of the reaction from FGS, unless the SL parliament votes against it.

Somalia doesn’t really have any leverage against Ethiopia right now. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Somalia intentionally seek closer military partnership with Ethiopia’a foes in return.

The next few years will really define the future of Somalia. The removal of foreign forces and the fight against AS is what will determine the direction of the country. If FGS succeeds, then Somalia still have a chance. But if it flops, then we’re done for good.
