Omar Duale’s story is not an ordinary one. Born from Ethiopian Somali family in Dire Dawa, where he grew up, Omar had a disciplined life even as a young man.

He revealed that he had to drive a Bajaj in Dire Dawa for five years while pursuing his engineering degree at Dire Dawa University, where he also served as a tutor.

How did he became a pilot in Ethiopian Airlines? The story is so inspiring with a lesson for many in the country and beyond.

The airlines first somali pilot, I think.

Arr yaa noo turjuma

We need more this is unnaceptable.

Somalis are the majority customers of Ethiopian airlines yet are ethnic profiled when it comes to employment opportunities.

We need more visibility in every area within the company not just a pilot.

It's strange to see a Somali speaking Ethiopian Amharic language like that. Walaahi I never seen such a thing.

Omar has become a media star over night in Ethiopia. His story of coming from a poor family and a mother who needed medical help her whole life and how his family sacrificed everything to send him to a private school and later university and how he worked as bajaj/tuktuk driver and later became an Ethiopian Airlines Airbus pilot is amazing. In the second video above, the male TV host was his teacher when he was in elementary school and Omar thanked him and made his teacher weep. Omar is so humble, he is a role model and an inspiration for many young Ethiopians.

Naah the issue is more than that its about deep state racism towards somalis and has existed for more than 60 years where somalis have faced racism in ethiopia through the different institutions that exist.

He is just one of the millions of somalis to finally become a pilot after Ethiopian airlines HR tried every way to sideline him and got his job after an outcry.
