This is David Lammy. He is an elected MP who represents his area in parliament. He spoke to this woman who says he can claim being British but not English as that identity is reserved for Anglo-Saxon descent white folks who inhabited England hundreds of years ago. Therefore, because he is clearly not white, he can’t claim that. He disagrees.

For those of you who are not British & may not know…. The UK consists of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Island. Britain is the Island containing the 1st three only.

Whenever I tick a form for my identity its either Black British, Black African or British Somali. I have never ever claimed English. Nor will I, cus I find it weird for Somalis to claim being English.

She's completely right. I'm somali from the uk. So I would consider myself British african or British somali. Britain is the country and I would say and England and Wales are more ethnic states. So yes I can claim the nation but not the ethnicity. Just like how I can be a national of any other nation but remain a somali ethnic....
