My cadaan chemistry teacher from sixth form a year ago recommended this book to me as it is one of his favourite books. It is called “Rivers of London”. It has one of the best somali lead characterswoman called sahra guleed whos also known as “the secret policemens daughter”.

what brought this post to the general section instead of the book section is the biography of her character

“Guleed recalls that her childhood home in Somalia had marble floors, servants, and a green Mercedes. She and her family fled from Somalia to the UK for an unknown reason.”

This made me sad and realised this is the reality of most somalis who fled the war. It may not have been as splendid as hers but most lived a modest, safe, comfortable life.

Modest and Mercedes in the same sentence. That sort of wealth in Africa is a luxury

Shes lived a good life because of her fathers job. Fiction Books exaggerate and distort the truth for the entertainment aspect.

“Her father is a former member of the Somali secret police, as evidenced by Lady Ty calling her 'The secret policeman's daughter.'[1]

Im so sure they will grab a bantu actor and slap the somali label onto them :mjcry:
Personally i would choose alisha boe or Maryan Haye( which i found when i searched somali actresses) . One is half somali and the other is full . I have watched some shows which alisha starred in and i thinks shes a great actress.

What kind of Somali woman has a hijab on at home while drinking khamri?

I just saw a series where Michael Fassbender played a character who had a sexual relationship with a Sudanese hijabi. This is just an attempt to normalize the image of modesty coupled with degeneracy; de-Islamize/Westernize the Islamic image by removing the values behind it while imbuing it with their lifestyle of immodesty and vice that contradicts the Islamic way. It's like the Netflix production where some dumb broad broke fast in Ramadan with alcohol.

These are mockery and an attempt to defile the values of Muslims. This is not "representation" or respect for us at all because these stories are not of us. This does not honor anything, quite the opposite. Nor is it how a Somali woman would depict herself. So why should we be happy when some cadaan weirdo is going around projecting his image of what he wants a hijabi to do, clapping like fools.

Notice they always focus on the woman. White people have historically been obsessed with Muslim women and their modesty, and they also had a historical background of making it their mission to undress them. This has historically been tied to colonialism, imperialism, and Western-centric bourgeois depiction of this linear modern life where religious values, and modest dressing (the latter, mostly among women) reflect backward inhibition to the hedonistic-based ideal life of a jahil and a mechanism of deonstructing any value order that can compete with the West. Check the process of removing the veil in Albania if you want an example.

She didnt drink khamri. She smelt it and said “its red wine”. In this she was in her friends house because she was concerned for her and she was a former alcoholic. So when she found the wine she smelt it and then said she drunk wine. Shes a complete devout muslim and is depicted as such in this novel.

This is straight from the actual rivers of london website where it summarises the book. This is another scene in the book.

In the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch, Sahra Guleed is portrayed as an observant Muslim, which typically includes abstaining from alcohol. However, there is a notable scene in the novel Lies Sleeping where Guleed is offered wine. In this instance, she declines the offer and is consistent with her religious beliefs. This moment underscores her character's commitment to her faith.

While she is deeply involved in the supernatural investigations central to the series, she maintains her personal boundaries which adds depth to her role in the narrative.

My bad. Still, you don't think that comes off as deceiving and suggestive, optics-wise? Someone without context will conclude with how I took it.

The rest of my stuff still stands, though. You should check into it to get some education. I think Muslims in the West need more historical awareness.

Yeah but you gotta read the book to understand it. Genuinely this book showcases how firm we are on deen through the character of sahra guleed. Im assuming the author has spent a lot of time around somalis because not only is the illustration 10/10 but her character is that of a “somali nature”. She demands respect from people and has a strong moral compass. She also doesnt practice magic the way the other characters do. Aaron really did a good job in showing our general cultural values.

also he showcases so many other people. The book is diverse asf and even has a white revert muslim called Dr Abdul Haqq Walid. Genuinely a really good book and I recommend it 100%

Thanks for the recommendation. As a 30-year-old premium man meat, I don't think Gen Z fiction is my thing, you know.
