Doesn't matter how fertile the land is if there is no water available.

High yield farms require around 8,000 cubic meters of water per HA on average (Rice is at 10-15k).

Read a few papers on our surface water capacity and I usually find a run off rate of 5 billion cubic meters in Juba and depending on the catchment area something similar in Shabelle.

If deduct for evaporation, leaks etc you would be lucky to have enough water to irrigate 800k hectares. Somalia needs 10-20 million HA

Also 250k tonnes won't feed half the population and probably not even 10% if it's still 12 million.

Since these are the brutal facts we need to instead focus on how to get that foreign currency to import food.

It is possible that you are underestimating Somalia's agricultural prospects. Badhadhe and Afmadow districts in Lower Juba seem to get more than enough rainfall to grow maize and sorghum. It would mean cutting down a large amount of forest, but it is possible. There is next to no farming going on in Badhadhe and Afmadow, so you would need to convince herders to turn their pastures into fields.

Saudi Arabia's oil is running out that's not a big secret, only reason they would give that much money to Somalia is so they can exploit their oil resources.

It's like an infertile couple, befriending an fertile homeless or at risk woman and feeding and clothing her, and befriending, so they can take advantage of her in the long run and get a child out of it without paying through the roof.

Nothing comes for free in this world, remember, there's always a hidden cost!

Saudi makes more money from haji and the religious tourism than oil.

Yes but Saudi Arabia is aligned with America.

Turkey I like but again their helping for their own interests also.

I just feel, America will just turn us into the next Iraq. Steal our oil for free and occupy us and replace the government with someone who can be controlled.

Why pay for the oil, when you can simply steal it for free.

Do you think turkey, Saudi or UAE or other Arab countries helped Iraq? They lied about him having WMD's it has been proven, they had no legal right to go into Iraq and start a war.

Billions worth of oil has been stolen by the US government facts, billions more are unaccounted for now....
i like the way you think
we need to have a chinese/russian puppet government somaliland should of took russias deal to accept its independence for the port of berbera
used the infrastructure money they would of gave to build maydh and zelia ports create jobs and roads from the port to ethiopia

I like Russia, I think their bad ass and aren't sacred of the Americas. I respect them because of that.

What water are you going to catch?

Rainwater is iffy due to the recurring droughts in Somalia. You can't run a commercial farm on it.

Reforestation would definitely help but I'm not sure how effective it'll be.

There is an interesting project planned for Somaliland where they plan to use to use seawater to increase the water in the atmosphere.

If we used that along with massive reforestation then we could rely more on rainwater.

None of the water from the recent rains will be captured, and most will run off into the ocean or evaporate. If it was all stored, then nobody would be complaining about droughts.

the will be a second russian somaliland :2tjlv3e:

No I just haven't forgotten how Russia helped the Ethiopians with troops and machinery, when we fought them for the Ogaden region.

If it wasn't for the Cubans and Russian troops, Ethiopia would've lost and we would have our part of our country back.

We'd be better off uniting and helping ourselves tbh....

Unless the governments reconcile and apply for eurobonds or even diaspora bonds for quick infrastructure and job creation i really dont think we can help ourselves

Ask yourself this? What's stopping us from drilling for oil now? And forcing governments and oil companies to pay us fairly?

The US and European governments, our country is an oil world reserve. Meaning when they've finished with Iraq and Saudi Arabia and the UAE oils have been delepted they will come for us.

Your right highly unlikely somaliland and Somalia will reconcile, as Somalia swallows their pride and admits the geneocide that occurred during the civil war and that somaliland is an independent country. They won't because America forbids them to do so.

These reservoirs, pumping stations or dams cost quite bit so they have to be economically viable for a major investor.

It's usually the government that fund or subsidies them.

somaliland should focus on its self and buy decommised offshore equipment they dont have as much oil as the somali central basin but just as much as yemen

If all of the rainwater was caught, then we can diversify our crops, produce more and farm throughout the year instead of just the rainy season.

Yeah I agree that it's a government/NGO type of job. But there are hundreds of thousands of somalis that do nothing but chew khaat everyday who should be doing these type of things as well.

Pearl Millet is even better than maize/sorghum and is more drought resilient. Don't know why it's not common in Somalia.
