Should these young guys play for somalias national team

It’s not about owing it’s the symbolism about representing your homeland and inspiring other Somali athletes to do the same
Be realistic abti. If Nigeria struggles to convince many of their players to play for them why would any decent player want to play for a failed state? Somalia is a second option and symbolism shouldn’t be their concern as professional athletes looking to maximise their careers.

If our football team was free from qabil id say they should play for the motherland. But it’s quite crazy for them who worked hard in a meritocratic system to be let down by their peers who got into the team simply due to nepotism. I wouldn’t waste time on it tbh until the team is fixed

Somalia is an overly nationalistic country, which is why it will always get diaspora kids. Nigeria isn’t which is why they struggle. Other nationalist countries in North Africa, Middle East and certain SSA countries like Senegal/Mali are also nationalist and have competent administrations, so they usually get the majority of their diaspora players in.

Those diaspora don’t really stand a chance for playing for European countries, hence why they end up playing for Somalia. There was even a guy in UK non league representing Somalia.

As for nationalism, all of West of Africa and North Africa have lost most their elite level players to EU nations. France has produced the best African players out of any country in the world. Algerians are very nationalistic but their best players have always turned up for France/Holland/ Belgium. Black African countries are even worse. I am not sure where the national argument fits in here. Players who have roots in Europe will naturally chose France, etc, simply because of the financial rewards and also because many of those players are second-third generation who have come through the youth teams. You have to remember some of these guys have been groomed to play for France from the age of 12+.

Nigerias biggest European migrant population is in the Uk. They haven’t really produced great players who are of Nigerian descent outside of Nigerian and UK. Now you see people like Saka and Eze have chosen England. I don’t think it’s because they are not nationalistic enough, there a lot of factors affecting which national side players play for.

Nationalism of course helps as we more players choosing to play for Morocco. I don’t think it’s the decisive factor though. When a kid has been playing for a EU team all through the youth teams, African fa have their work cut to convince them change their mind.
